1. Know your directive verbs to understand what the essay requires (https://www.nsw.gov.au/education-and-training/nesa/hsc/student-guide/glossary)

2. Establish a strong thesis relating to the question and outline your arguments you will make to prove that thesis in the introduction (briefly)

3. Write structured paragraphs that directly address the question and thesis. No point dumping information without demonstrating how it supports your arguments (which you outlined in the introduction and form your paragraph themes). I suggest using PEEL paragraphs, meaning Point, Evidence, Explanation and then Link back to the thesis/question.

4. Support arguments with evidence, whether that be statistics, theory or diagrams. Diagrams can be really good to show your depth of knowledge, as can statistics.

5. Use economic terminology to elevate your responses. Your textbook should have a glossary somewhere of definitions, and you will learn theory throughout the year.

These are basic tips, but a good starting place. Others to elevate your response would be showing caveats to economic theory/argument/policy (e.g. tradeoffs, limitations etc.). If you are writing an essay now and would like some help please reach out directly and I'm happy to review and give basic pointers :)

I hope my essays help a bit!

To add on to Ben's tips, make sure that you don't just use statistics, but demonstrate a thorough knowledge of past and current trends in various economic indicators. You can make both qualitative and quantitative judgements relating to this, and employ recent case studies to show engagement.

Instead of just drawing diagrams, integrate them deeply into your analysis. It's always good to refer to specific points on the diagram.

I also agree about the "however" points, i.e. the caveats to economic theories, as that is a key differentiator between band 5 and 6 essays. Showing the limits of theories when applied to the real world creates essential nuance.
