hey, I'm thinking of economics at uni.
When I say economics, I think I want economics. I'm not certain. What I was gonna ask though: is there a big difference between doing arts and majoring in eco, doing an economics degree or majoring in eco through commerce? In terms of career prospects, would it make a difference which way I did this? -thanks.
I can only use my own university (unsw) as an example.
If you do economics within an arts degree, you're essentially cutting out all the mandatory courses you may need to do if you were to do eco under a com or eco degree. Under arts, you're just choosing courses to do at will and not really following as clear a path for economic majors under an com/eco degree.
Do a straight eco degree and essentially, there is not that much flexibilty in what you'll be doing. You'll obviously have to do economics and have the option of studying another major on the side but eco will be your main focus.
Do economics under commerce and it gives you a little bit more flexiblity in what economic courses to choose from. Different economics majors are available under both commerce and economics degrees at unsw but the commerce ones tend to be more varied in their course requirements.
Then again, there are different types of economics to do anyway. You could choose from plain, straight economics. Or pick up econometrics or financial economics which involves a fair bit of econometic modelling. Or choose something like economics history if all the maths isnt your thing.
Career options vary. I do economics because its a substantial background to have for employment but then again, becoming an actual economist isn't really my true aim in life.
