Heya I’ve got an Economics in class essay coming up this term. We are studying the ‘Labour Market.’ We won’t be given the question, but we have been given but we know that the main focus of the essay will be about Australia’s industrial relation system.

We will have to (1)demonstrate factual and extensive knowledge of the Australian industrial relations system as well as evaluate the arguments for and against a single unified national industrial relations system

For (1) should i just be looking at explaining the three streams of the current wage determination system: industrial awards, certified agreements, and Australian Workforce Agreements ?

will i have to explain any sort of impacts on the demand or supply of labour in this essay aswell?

Being my first economics essay ever, I’m not too sure how to go about it. Our teacher is really shit. We’re teaching ourselves the whole text took.

Can anyone shed light on this specific topic, maybe you’ve previously had a similar type question? Or maybe know of any good resources?

Thanku ! Much appreciated!

a good insight into this would be to look into some legal studies notes in the option topic of workplace, this will help you understand the IR system. Also, the business studies topic Employment relations does help. Sounds weird to study another subject but it helps, i studies all 3 last year and that really helped me understand the industrial relations system.

the 3 main wage determination systems are:

Awards - across a whole industry
Certified agreements - a specific group of workers
AWAs - an individual agreement between worker and employer

You also need to look at price floor (minimum wage) and the effects it has on the supply and demand, and how the wage doesn't reflect the supply & demand equilibrium.
