Does anyone know which of these 2 scientist supported the view that science should not be influenced by social and political influence and which opposed it.

i thought it was max planck who believed in pure science whereas einstein opposed this view,by urgin the US president to make atom bombs

but in the Success one HSC book. the answer was that max planck supported the nazi germany and so on and so forth.

i just want to clear this up

Planck was a patriot and thought it wasnt the responsibility of the scientist to decide what happened with his work. Einstein didnt agree and thought that scientists should act in the interest of the greater good. Or something like that.....

plank thought that it was up to the state to choose the use of the work ... einstein thought that it should be used free from political forces

pc wizz, your incorrect.

Planck thought that science should be researched for science's sake alone, without any consideration of outside influences.

Einstein believed that scientists should consider how their research would be used while conducting it.

i have to disagree on that... i believe plank and other 96 or so scientists signed manifesto of 97 or something, support germany going to war (use the power of science, presumably) whereas einstein and other 2-3 scientists signed manifesto to europeans against it...

see, this is the kinda stuff i am talking about.

now

planck signed the manifesto in first world war, then he regrets.
in second world war. he resigns from kaiser wilhem institute cos he doesnt like nazis.
and his son died trying to kill hitler

but then. there are other reasons to suggest that he helped the war effort or some crap like that.

where mr einstein is great pacifist, and you will think he believes in pure science.

but then he turn 360 degrees , i mean 180 degress and asked the us president to create an atom bomb

The manifesto that he signed supported the invasion of belgium. He still believed that scienctific research should not have to consider what it would be used for. He was a patriotic German, he supported the war effort but did not believe that he should have to consider what his scientific research would be used for.

2003 CSSA Physics Trial
Q28. (5 marks)
Outline how Einstein and Planck's views of Science differed in relation to Science research being influenced by society and politics

Sample Answer given by CSSA paper:

Both Planck and Einstein were German scientists during World War II. This gave rise to a dilemma - to stay and assist in the scientific research no matter what it was being used for, or leave and take knowledge with you. Planck had decided to stay on at the institute in Germany and continue to develop scientific theories that were being used in the war. Plank continued to research what was funded by the goverment and what they were requesting. Einstein left and lean an anti war campaign from America. A pacifist and believer in truth, Einstein believed in research being free of political powers, being able to discover as kowledge became available

this is still inconclusive.

this is what i wrote for the dot point

max planck supported the independence of scientific institutes as oppose to science being used as an instrument under an anthority

in the first world war, being a fervant nationlist, max planck support the military invasion of german armies and sign the manifesto of 93 intellectuals. to which regretted after the war. in1930s, he watched the rise of power of nazis lead by hitler, who impose many anti-semitic policies to which planck strongly oppses. he even resigned as the president of Kaiser Wilhem institiute to prove he stance against imposing influence of politics on science.

einstein endorsed plancks' view of basic aim of science, however, einstein was accutely aware of social and political influences on science, though a great pacifist, he nevertheless wared presidnet Rosevelt about the dangers of german atomic bomb, and put forward the develepment of manhattan project

planck;s view on science was that pure science will prevail and researched to achive the common good for humankind

any suggestions>?
