Mr Planck was an extremely patriotic German and supported Hitler and the Nazi regime at first as he saw no problems with them. He signed the Manifesto of the 93- a formal declaration that leaders of German arts and sciences supported the acts of the German army. In 1930 he was appointed president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institution, but resigned in 1937 in protest to the Nazi anti-semitism. He spoke out against these views and refused work on any of Germany's war research projects. Unlike Planck, Einstein was a pacifist, and when Planck signed the Manifesto of 93, Einstein signed a counter manifesto. Being a Jew, he faced much prejudice and fled from Germany. When Hitler rose to power, he was in America and decided not to return to Germany fearing for his life. Einstein believed that scientific knowledge should be removed from social and political forces and people should be devoted to the pursuit of knowledge.

This is nice example of how BS physics is now, this is pure HISTORY... ROTE LEARNING

I'm trying to think up a way to present equations/formulae/calculations to support an answer for this question, since generally they like to see you do so. Any suggestions?

Maybe, "Planck's formula, E = hf, discriminates based on the colour of light (since the colour of visible light is related to frequency and wavelength), whereas Einstein's E = mc² did not discriminate and accepted all forms of mass and energy, therefore Planck stayed with the Nazis, who also discriminated based on colour".

you can't come up with a formula for anything. Those two formulae you stated have got nothing to do with anything. They only like to see formulae when it is relevant. In this case it is not. You can only talk about how Einstein believed that science should be removed from social and political forces and how planck thought otherwise. This is a pure history question and you can't involve anything else.

he refused to participate. he merely signed a letter urging the american president to develop a bomb, purley because the nazis were trying to develop one. im prettu sure he said that the bomb should never be used
