What aspects of the novel had the greatest impact on you. In your response you should reflect on both the ideas and prose fiction techniques.

Throughout the novel, Hardy portrays various aspects of religious hypocrisy in society. The readers of “Tess of The D’Urbervilles” are forced to question the teachings of the Church and Christianity right through the novel. By using specific events to convey his views, such as the Baptism of the Baby, the disparagement of Tess by Angel and the conversion of Alec, Hardy makes a point of the contradiction of the teachings of the church and their actions. Such events make note of the public judgement of ones sin, whether a sin is labeled as such according to the intention or the act, and the ability to easily forgive a constant sinner as opposed to a pure being.

Acceptance and forgiveness is the apparent basis of Christianity and the Churches teachings. However, after having to baptize the child herself, Sorrow is not accepted by the Church as it is an “intrusive creature...Bastard gift of shameless Nature who respects not the civil law”. Hardy conveys the position of social laws in the Church, as opposed to the Christian Laws that should be implemented. Stating that, as a result of “Liturgical Reasons”, those being really the reaction of the Christian Public if the Parson were to bury the ‘sinful’ child, the Parson could not bury the child. This portrays a sense of judgement by the Christian public, proving the Religious hypocrisy in society.
