To enrol for the course I want to do (News Media), I have to goto a meeting on the 29th of Jan. Is anyone else doing this?

I still have no idea about the Ultimo thing.. i guess i just have to ring them up.... ahhh i hate doing that.

One more question.... does any one know what this first aid certificate i need... it says: Must hold a current VETAB accredited/Workcover approved Senior First Aid
Certificate or equivalent??

Hi frenchy -

That's odd they'd be asking for Senior First Aid Certificate - even the Universities here are only asking for Emergency First Aid (Level 1) - which I completed through the Metro Ambulance Service - word of mouth states St Johns is more 'by the book' while Metro Amb. tends to be more 'practical' in it's training methods.

Anyway, my guess is they're asking for a Level 3 in First Aid - on the First Aid sheet I got on the day of my training it has printed Workplace Occupational First Aid Course (Level 3). Perhaps check out some of the places that offer first aid course, St Johns or the Metro Ambulance Service -

Nah - down here (Victoria) TAFE provides 2 Nursing courses:

1)Certificate III in Community Services (Aged Care Work) - I *think* graduates become an AIN (Assistant in Nursing). Which, probably has different terms around each state.

2) Certificate IV in Health - upon completion become an Enrolled Nurse. Victoria now calls an Enrolled Nurse, a Registered Nurse Division 2 (RNs are Registered Nurse Div.1.).

A Uni degree gives a chance of a faster promotion than say a Tafe nurse.

Yeah Enrolled Nurses get a lower pay as they're not as high up as the registered nurse.

This is the rates for an EN agency nurses:
ENROLLED NURSE:
Year 1 AM shift: $18.20 ph PM shift: $20.10 ph
Nights: $20.48 SAT/Public holiday: $25.79 ph SUN: $29.58

Year 5 (this is the maximum pay level you can reach as an EN)
AM: $19.77 ph PM:$21.83 Nights: $22.25
SAT/Public holiday: $28.O2 (don't you love that 2 cents?!)
SUN (all shifts) $32.14.
The difference between yr 1-2-3-4 pay levels is really quite minimal. Only (approx) between 30-50 cents at each level/shift.

I know that as a new RN you get paid between 32, 000 - 33,000 a year gross. Also, nurses have an automatic raise in salary each year until year 8 (varies with EN/RN) so that they start at pay point 1.1 and work up to 1.8 where it stays - forever mon!!

(Yep, I've looked up a lot on nursing + have a few family members/family friends who are nurses. )

But dont you usually finish year 8 and there is a promotion waiting for you as Nurse manager ??? or there is a more longer wait than 8 years

Now you have me stumped - I wonder if the most common thing would be apply for a higher position...............

But you do have a valid point - re: 8th yr then go onto manager/NUM and end up with another raise in salary. Hmm, I'll try to find out more-

This is is what i know..
Tafe is to become an enrolled nurse, they earn roughly around $30,000 (going up per year). Enrolled nurses get stuck with the undesirable things like washing people.

Uni, you become a registered nurse they earn anything from $34,000 up, increasing each year. Being a registered nurse you get much more responsibilities such as medicine, as well as the opportunity to specialise such as working in surgery or as a midwife etc, if you specialise you get paid more.

After you have enough experience (and i think another qualification) you can become a unit manager, which your incharge of all nurses in your unit (like the head nurse in maternity ward), they can earn around $50,000.

Then after that there is a nursing manager which can earn up to around $70,000.

There is pretty much endless opportunities as a nurse as there are nurse educators, consultants, researchers or if your lucky a nurse practioner which does alot of the same stuff as your local G.P.
Basically with more experience and qualifications you get the higher you can rise. After 8 years in one position, your pay stays the same.
I think many just stay in one spot because they become comfortable where they are. My boyfriends dad used to be a registered nurse for 16yrs, but didnt want to continue going up, and he says thats a common thing. You just got to keep learning and gaining experience, to go onto higher things.

I dunno, but I guess becoming an Enrolled Nurse/RN Div 2 wouldn't you get spoken to like 'crap' by the Registered Nurses??? That's something which would kind of put me of doing the cert. IV in hlth.

Sort of the same as what frenchy said, but apparently the EN's do more 'hands on work' while RN's have more administrative roles. Yet, the EN responsibilities are increasing i.e can give some IV meds now.

My mum is a RN, and she is a Mid-Wife (they deliver babies). Its a really good job, in the sense that there's a high enjoyment factor.

But the thing with nursing is she works crappy hours, over a long period. i.e. she worked night work (10:30pm -7am) 6 days in a row, then she gets 2 or 3 days off, and 1 and a half of those days off, she's sleeping.

Bottom line is, you will enjoy it if you love the job, but if you need a social life, becoming a RN means you have no social life.

Her salary is pretty good though.

It is true that you do get treated like crap by more qualified people, but then again you do it for a year at tafe, get the qualification, then the following year you can apply to uni to become a registered nurse, and that course will only take 2 years since you've got tafe qualification. Thats what i plan to do.
