I am just interested to know when the syllabus specifies environment affecting phenotype, do they mean that the environment triggers a change in the genotype, i.e. signaling the switch on/off of a gene, OR do they mean the environment affecting the phenotype, without affecting the genotype.

So how do we differentiate between the two? Say for example in photosynthesis, if we covered up one plant and it stopped growing. How do we know if the environment has triggered the gene for growth to be off or whether it has just prevented growth as there wasnt sufficent nutrients.

Phenotype is the result of the genotype expressing itself. Both terms are corretalted.
