Gday, well i have been just doing a few exercises out of surfing chemistry, the acidic environment Page 5, on calulating volumes etc..

And im havin a bitta trouble

The question goes like this:

788kg of methane undergoes complete combustion.

a)Write an equation for this reaction

this is what i thaught it would be:

CH4 + O2 ----> CO2 + H4

But in the answers it is :

CH4 + 2O2 ----> CO2 + 2H2O

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE PRODUCTS WILL BE????

i can never really get the products right, i ask my teacher and he dosn't make much sence.

it sounds like a simple question, but im a dumass at chemistry:chainsaw:

So can anybody help me?? thanks

Whenever any hydrocarbon (anything with H atoms and C atoms) is undergoes complete combustion (ie reacted with oxygen) the products will ALWAYS be water vapour and carbon dioxide gas. If the combustion is incomplete then there will also be some soot (solid carbon) formed.

If theres any other equations you're having trouble with Im more then happy to help. :)

there are many rules like that in chemistry, you just have find them in the text books and learn them one by one; i think most are straight foward and logical if you know the basics well like balancing the equation and why chemicals undergo reactions, etc...

hey whenever a hydrocarbon reacts undergoes complete combustion , the products r always carbondioxide and water

Combustion will not go to completion if there is not enough oxygen.
