hey I have an in class essay where the ques is : Discuss the causes for unemployment, the economic and social problems created by unemployment and the policies used to address it.

I dun really understand the causes for unemployment... these are some of the factors i thought i should put in my essay: The level of economic growth, constraints on economic growth, rising participation rates, structural change, technology, productivity, training, labour costs....etc

Did I miss any?? or should i cut back on some considering that it will be written under exam conditions (50mins)?
I would really appreciate your help:)

this is just advice, u dont have to follow it if u dont think it is good for u

u could talk about the different types of u/e, and then say what causes each one. eg. cyclical u/e is caused by a downturn in the level of economic activity, structural u/e occurs becuase of the structural changes caused by changes in technology and demand, etc.
doing this might save some time for u to write for the other parts

but if u choose to talk about the causes of u/e without talking about the types, u mite want to explain as many as you can in detail. but dont overdo this part. u should give urself one third of the time (about 15-20mins) doing each part because the other parts will also contribute to marks

Well what you've listed is straight out of the Leading Edge textbook so I'd say you're on the right path... Try grouping some of the causes together, such as structural change & technology to condense it a little.

oh and one more question:
Is the current rate of unemployment around 5% and would that be the natural rate of unemployment?

Thank you

current rate is 5.6% or something along those lines (dont quote me). Its not the natural rate of unemployment, because you dont really ever achieve that, it moves to slightly below the unemployment rate at that time (unless of course the unemployment rate is below a sustainable level when you would be below it) Im not sure as to what they would say the natural rate is in the current economic climate, but it would be a bit below 5%.
