i'm in year 11 currently and we have to prepare a broad essay for our comparative study on the film ' the talented mr ripley' and the novel 'the great gatsby'

how do i structure it? do i write about each text seperately or do i combine them?

either is acceptable. since you say you are doing comparative study, you might be able to do a little of both - ie. integrate to compare and deal separately to contrast. in general, markers say that students who can integrate their essays are generally te better ones - HOWEVER, if you dont think your integrated essay is going very well, its better to deal with the two texts separately then sum up which bits compare/contrast together in the conclusion. NOTE: you will never be marked down for not integrating an essay, but you may be marked down if you try to integrate your information and dont do it well.
good luck :)

thanks sivermooN! i think i'll stick to dealing with the texts seperately and then summing up the comparisons and contrasts..
that helps a lot !! =)
