Did you read the whole article? Their use of "Australian born" seems to refer to those who are not (at least in their immediate lineage) migrant-born, and thus not of Asian descent.

Yes I know there are some Asian families who have been here in Australie for 150 years, but they're a tiny minority.

Yeah, that's just talking about their domestic intake. You can nearly get this out of the VTAC etc booklet.
Like at Uni Adelaide we have ~100 domestic and ~45 international. Therefore "almost 70 per cent are domestic" i.e. Australian born. (Well ok they don't have to be 'Australian born' but I think many are, but they may be second generation.
I think the studies just been a bit weak and lost itself in the jargon.
Still doesn't change the kind of figures, which like I remember someone famously writting 33% Asian, 33% Indian, 33% Australian.

"It says the rise of overseas-born and second-generation students - mostly from Asian countries - in the prestige courses of dentistry and optometry confirms the high importance of education to many migrant families."

so being australian and born in australia i'm still technically a fob :D
yay for fobs then. I need to find an aZn pair of jeans so i can look fobby now and dye my hair and spek poor engrish.

in my year in newcastle there are only like 8 asians with australian citizenship. Theres probably about another 30 or so but they're all internationals. Then there are other smaller minorities like 4-5 indians and some italians and lebanese. I'd say migrant first and 2nd generation doesnt even make up 25% in my course. That's newcastle for u

Yeah but look at the population spread in Newcastle. I bet they still ask you if you live in Chinatown, or when you're being deported!

hahaha
well most in med arefrom sydney anyway so it's ok. But at college people assume I'm an international, which is annoying. It's like "so you're from japan too?"
"no..."
"singapore?"
"no..."

well its certainly the case that asian parents, having been raised in a confucian society value education highly and often (although not always) encourage their children to aspire to highly paid and prestigious occupations such as law, commerce, medicine and dentistry...so you can sort of understand where all those stereotypes come from.

Where does that statistic say anything about ethnicity? You're just assuming that Australian born students aren't asian.
Sorry if the thread title was misleading, I meant to introduce the nature of the article, that was all. I guess most of the Australian born students are Asian and therefore the number of skippies in most med, dentistry, optom courses are Asian of some sort.

nah
it's just unsw that's permeating this false belief that asians dominate the med/dent/health courses

look at usyd and unewcastle.. it's pretty even on the demographics. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a race quota *cough*. Remember how they brought that up about adelaide med? oh the bitching...

on a side note, pears are delicious, and so is sangria

I'm asian and i can't say that out of the 4 interviews i've been to, i wasn't recieved warmly/friendly/professionally. Then again, who knows what the interviewers jot down on their notes?

Just thought I'd mention that not all asian parents were "raised in a confucian society". Mine were raised Catholic, in a dominantly Catholic country with the major influence being Spanish. They still valued my education and advancement more than the parents of other kids.

It excludes overseas students who pay full fees, but says many of the overseas students are likely to migrate to Australia now the Federal Government has made it easier for them to apply for permanent residence when they complete their courses.
Don't all overseas students pay full fees?

of course it doesnt its called a generalisation?!
but i think ure both not quite there..

i feel its immigrants families.. not all again but quite a few ... as they leave from a higher socio-economic to a lower one and then want to climb back up
