Hmm.. I'm confused by the meaning of the key word "evaluate"
From the Board of Studies document,
evaluate means: "make a judgement based on criteria".

So, say a question goes like this:
"Evaluate the definite integral of sec^2(x) dx from x=pi/4 to x=pi/3" (2003 HSC 2 Unit Maths)
Do we have to make some judgment, and not just give a numerical value? like do we need to say that the integral being sqrt(3) - 1 is significant in that it is not a rational number and can't be visualised without distorting the exact value, and hence demonstrates the wonder of mathematics to the world?
or maybe something like, it's significant because it represents the area under the cuve y=sec^2(x) from x=pi4 to x=pi/4, hence it's important in enabling us to calculate area without using the area formulae established by Mathematicians before the invention of integral calculus?
Or is it better to make judgement against it? so like this stupid looking sqrt(3) - 1 is just a meaningless and hopeless number. We can't do anything with it and so it doesn't contribute to our bank of knowledge and can be easily ignored by anyone.

I post this here because I figure you guys might know more than the 2 Unit students.
Thank you so much!!

its funnier if people would actually get fooled

something like my schools font is really crap, in my 3u trial I confused the integral sign with an s but i didnt get any carry forward error? what do you guys think my chances are of more marks?

I dunno don't force it

?? is your post empty???
It doesn't really make sense to me... you treat the integral sign as an S but it doesn't affect your answer? I'll be suspicious

uh.. this doesn't connect to my question...

umm I guess your sex bit is intended for that thread...
Are you drunk or something?

oh this starts getting ridiculous.. shall we continue?

yes, u can make those judgements if those are ur opinions
although id advise against a negative judgement...u may insult the marker

i was always taught to give PLUS points, MINUS points and then give your opinion

do you think if I wrote the +- sign it would help the marker detect my points?

... im stumped here
since when did the key terms apply to maths?

stop complicating it to something it isnt

the only time i ever explain an answer is where im going to the next step in prooving if velocity is >0 or <0 (in SHM or rectilinear motion questions) because of a particle moving from the 'left' or 'right' of the origin.

i wouldn't even READ the word evaluate, i just see integral sign, with a function in it, with limits in it , then i just integrate... write answer, move on to the next question.

correct me if im wrong but isn't that the correct way?

My opinion?
My teacher told me that in evaluate questions you have to make objective judgement based on objective information or facts...

OK, so, like, if you've got, like a describe question, right? Well, like, here's what I would do.

First, I would, like, describe the question, you know, just for coolness. Then I'd draw a diagram of the question, y'know? And then, like, uhhhhm. Whoa the stars are really bright this morning. Why the hell is my monitor trying to engulf me?!

guys, you people are hopeless
I was seriously trying to ask this question, but you all took it as a joke!!
well if you get the email notification you can see this... I wasn't serious haha
Okay, I'm okay with that, but consider the people who have just registered to this forum with an intention to ask questions. Maybe the questions are easy for you, smart people, but not for them, nor for me.
end of non-sense post...

i'm sorry, but if the question says evaluate the integral, doesnt it just mean solve it, except u dont really "solve" integrals, u evaluate them between certain limits, i dont think any explination is required, at all

mojako: every single instance I've seen evaluate it has practically meant the same as solve.

Prediction: ngai and Rorix are completely correct... for the 2005HSC...
