A LITTLE HELP!

Hey guys!

This is the prac we'll be conducting next week..
"Perform a first hand investigation to determine the motor effect" :(

If someone could give me a copy of this experiment I'd be forever thankful! If not, could you please help me with this question?

What would be the purpose of incorporating an electronic balance to measure changes in mass (a wire is to be positioned between two magnets separated by a block of wood on the balance to demonstrate the motor effect) and how would that enable me to construct a Force versus Current graph?

Thanks for your time!
:)

the exact prac lay out and data arent all that important, just know the concept behind the pracs and how they are tested by the experiment.

in this case just describe any scenario in which the motor effect takes place, eg, any motor, a connected wire hanging in a magnetic field, or anything similar. first the motor efect can be detected and identified, then describe a few procedures to change a few variables (eg current in wire - by changing the power pack settings, B field strength, using stronger/ more magnets, etc) to see the resulting effects. in the analysis, you should describe the motor effect in some detail, mention the catapult force and the like, and how everything are related(using equations - F=BIlsin@ - if required...cant remember if this was another dot pt). there'll b some discussions concerning validity and reliability.... although the later isnt all that important in this prac... as the data only needs 2 be qualitative reiterate the definition of the motor effect and how the experiment tests this in the conclusion.

Well, if you don't have all of them, there is one in particular:

Perform a first hand investigation to determine the motor effect :(

Oh for God's sake, don't be so lazy and look it up yourself. It's in your textbook (Jacaranda and Excel) or failing that, you have internet access, with tonnes of HSC help sites.

Try this one: http://webs.mn.catholic.edu.au/physics/emery/hsc_motors.htm

I think the Board of studies made a big mistake by watering down the subjects, it only seems to be making students more dependent.

Well excuse me for asking CHUDYMASTER!!!! :argue: (SWINE!) For your bloody information I ALWAYS do the work myself.

I have looked through all my text books... Jacaranda, Spotlight, Surfing, Macquarie Revision Guide, Excel, MacMillan and Longman Contexts, and they haven't helped so perhaps I should be more direct in asking OTHER fellow board members...

What would be the purpose of incorporating an electronic balance to measure changes in mass (a wire is to be positioned between two magnets separated by a block of wood on the balance to demonstrate the motor effect) and how would that enable me to construct a Force versus Current graph?

I would appreciate any hints or suggestions.

Thankyou once more

PS to CHUDYMASTER thanks for the link

I have the exact same prac as you next week too. I'm dying. There aren't any textbooks with the same practical at all, and my teacher hasn't said anything about it. I don't even know how to set out the results or what to write in the conclusion. I'm so stuffed right now, i've been searching every where and still can't find anything decent.

I'm lost about what the balance is used for, i'm lost about what the graph is supposed to show. *sigh* Bah, stupid school ._. can't do anything right.

Help would be appreciated. (Yes, I've checked several threads, textbooks and websites, yet still cannot find anything)

The balance is a measure of weight (which as you know is a force).

Since the wire is undergoing a repuslive force (configure magnets and wires accordingly) due to the motor effect, it will exert a weight on the balance when current flows. As current increases so does the weight force (which will be visible from the weight increasing on the balance).

Keep increasing the current and you'll observe an increase in force. Simple.
