I was just wondering what internal marks would be ideal to get if I was to aim for an e3 or e4 in 3u maths. obviously all schools set different exams but what would be an e3 or e4 worthy mark in an average public school?

The highest mark you can possibly get. Rank is more important than marks.

e3 -> 75%+
e4 -> 85%+
But as mattskater stated, ranks are more important for internals. Look at how many students got e3/e4 at your school in previous years to estimate the number of e3/e4s your cohort will get. If the number is low, then you'll need a really good rank (typically, at an average non-selective school, you'd want to aim for top 3-5 for an e4).

E3 - 55 - 65 %

Those are some pretty good results if you ask me.

From a data of 8955 students who sat the exam in 2015.

What I reckon from those statistics, is if your school marks are lower than the HSC marks, your school paper is setting a harder standard.

If your school marks are above those marks, than your school paper is easier. (Of course I make the assumption that you sit both exams )

Looking at those score, it seems like the students are pretty well prepared. 1 or 2 mistakes and that puts you below the top 10% in the state doing that exam.

OK your right........HSC Mark is what you got in the actual exam, a Scaled Mark from what I gather factors into account what you did at school + HSC Exam.

Not sure coming from interstate, if you guys were curious:

WA's Hardest math = mean score 61.22% in 2015 (from 1544 candidates) v mean score in NSW hardest math 82.8% (3333 candidates)

WA's 2nd Hardest math= mean score 63.88% (from 3936 candidates) v mean score in NSW 2nd hardest math 81.8% (8954 candidates)

They are totally different curriculums but the gap in percentages is quite substantial.

That's quite an amazing difference, which indicates to me that students in Year 12 here, get into an exam in much better preparation.

My understanding about theses scores is all wrong.

I have just accessed a file that gave a rough cut off about the minimum for an E4 (based on Raw marks data)

My thinking all along way to get an E4 In Maths Extension 1: you had to get 92% or thereabouts. I have been studying my balls off to set the standard at this level. It's always better to aim high isn't it? As it gives you some leeway to fall back on .

For the Raw Score Data these were the cut offs:

Mathematics (advanced): 94/120 =78.33%
Maths Extension I: 57/84=67.79%
Maths Extension II: 76/120 =63.33%

Looking at the 2014 and 2015 Maths Extension 1 exam papers which are out of 70 marks, ideally a student should looking to get around 48 marks or more to get an E4 (as a rough guide-assuming that the school assessment and HSC exam mark are of a similiar standard)

0.6779 x 70 marks =47.45 marks

Looking at the 2014 and 2015 Maths Extension 2 exam papers which are out of 100 marks, ideally a student should looking to get around 64 marks or more to get an E4 (as a rough guide-assuming that the school assessment and HSC exam mark are of a similar standard)

0.6333 x 100 marks =63.33 marks
