hey bored of studiers,
I'm currently in year 11 and I'm doing ext. 1 maths, I haven't really come across a topic that has challenged me and I am considering trying extension 2 next year and seeing how I go. My maths teacher (who has taught extension 2 multiple times before) thinks I have the ability to do extension 2, although through further inquiry I've heard that the preliminary ext 1 course is no where near as hard as the extension 2 HSC course and you should only consider 4u if your prelim 3u marks are like 85+ (mine is just under 80 [although it should be higher I just make a lot of silly mistakes] ). My 2U course mark is around 90 although if not for a few silly mistakes it would be closer to 95 - I find 2U very easy). I was wondering if anyone could shine some light on how much a step up 4u HSC is compared to 3u prelim. Obviously it is a lot harder, but is it this huge leap everyone makes it out to be? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It is a huge leap, and many people get disheartened. But it is worth it in the end. A raw HSC exam mark of about 68 scales to 90 - you are rewarded handsomely for your efforts.
And if you don't find the maths so far all that challenging, you are probably capable of doing better than that.

You'll be fine, at first it may seem intimidating and you'll go through some tough moments, but if you consistently put in the effort, you'll ace it with pride :D.

The short: Go for it.

Always better to give it a shot and if things go truly bad (30%, which judging by your near 80 prelim X1 and 90 2u is theoretically unlikely), better to have dropped than regretted not attempting. It's the only course where you can possibly argue: "If you're good at the field of study, take the course as scaling compensates for its difficulty".
