Could anyone please summarise the changes in the fair work act and how it changes the previous legislation involving Australian Workplace Agreements etc..

FWA is the government body that replaced the industrial relations act. As far as content, I think it remains the same as industrial relations, which concerns wages, contracts and Industrial disputes. AWA's are less popular today, there has been a move to enterprise agreements - employees and trade unions are involved in wage negotiations.

I was under the impression that AWAs are illegal now?

So it could be said that individual negotiation is still applicable in some circumstances providing the 10 standards apply?
