Is the network already set up? We need a few more details before we can help you with your actual problem.

Windows 98SE

Configure your computer for file sharing

1. Click on the Start button, and then select Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click on the Network icon. In the window that appears, make sure the Configuration tab is selected. If you do not see the Network icon, click on the view all Control Panel options link on the left side of the window.
3. In The following network components are installed: section, if you do not see File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks listed, then:
1. Click Add.
2. Select Service and then click Add.
3. Select File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks.
4. Click OK.
4. In the same window, click on the File and Print Sharing button.
5. In the dialog box that appears, check the box next to "I want to be able to give others access to my files". Uncheck the box for "I want to be able to allow other to print to my printers".

Windows XP

right click on the drive (e.g. c: ) you want to share, and click on sharing and security.
enable sharing, and check both the tick boxes (share this folder... and allow network users...)

---

now you have to make sure both computers are in the same workgroup.

Windows XP

right click on my computer, and go to properties.
click on the computer name tab, and press the change button.
fill in the workgroup name with anything you want, e.g. network, home, etc.

i'm not sure for windows 98, but it should be the same. right click on my computer, and find an option to change the workgroup of the computer. fill it in with the same work group you used previously.

try that out.

if you're having trouble with file sharing, setup an FTP server on your XP machine, and FTP Client software on the 98 machine.

It's a quick way of 'file sharing' in a way.

changing workgroup settings in 98 is in the Network properties which is in the control panel

there should be a tab labelled 'network identification' or something similar.

I've got an XP and a 98 machine networked through ethernet. To get the file sharing to work i had to have NetBeui protocol binded to both comps.

In XP its not automatically installed, but theres an option to install it from the network settings panel.

Maybe it was just a coincidence that it worked after I installed it I don't know. But it works now. So you can give it ago.
