So I think I'm going to do Financial Economics and Finance as my majors.

I either want to get into private day trading (eventually) or project finance. Which would be the best finance electives to do?

I reckon I'll do game theory and applied macro for financial economics major but im not sure which ones to do for finance.

The school of finance has this brochure which gives some subject suggestions on page 6

http://wwwdocs.fce.unsw.edu.au/banking/future/First-year_brochure2009.pdf

From what i can gather from other's posts, a finance major is quite a general degree for the financial services industry?

I guess if you do any subjects in the UNSW finance major, get top grades and present yourself in an outstanding way, you still stand a better chance than a stuggling student who did all the right subjects. it wont be too hard to learn on the job if they think you're a bright cookie and give you a shot at it.

In this economic climate, i think most graduates are praying to just get a job in finance, let alone choose what area.

LOL GG to me. none of those have fit my plans however, i think for what im specialising in...it suits the specialised field of financial planning/advisory

i.e. FINS2643, FINS3655, FINS3637
