This might sound extremely odd, but I was just wondering if anyone knows of useful finger exercises or stretches to use during an exam - particularly English/Eco/Business/History etc. My fingers, like most other people's, tend to get sore after writing an essay - I'm just wondering if there's anyway to alleviate the pain (or even prevent it)

write through the pain
when you're stressing in the hsc, the pain and crampage in your hand is the last thing on your mind.

Dont think that you can prevent the pain - its only natural when you write large amounts in such a short time.
However, you might buy a pen that suits your hand - sure, it might be expensive, but you will be able to write more in a quciker amount of time and get less pain.
When my fingers hurt, I clamp my hand together - kinda like making claws - dunno if it works for you, but it does for me.

when your hand starts to hurt...just rest it for a few seconds and get straight back into your work again.

When my hand began to hurt during an exam, I just stretched them for a few seconds. Then I get back to writing and continue to smudge my work because I'm left-handed. :(

Um ok. Here is my trick. Basically keep the fingers of your writing hand moving during the 5 minutes it normally takes for everyone to settle. Just like youre playing the piano or something. Even as your walking in or standing outside the exam room. This circulates the blood to your fingers in the same way singers vibrate their lips to increase blood circulation to their mouths. I also like to roll my wrists a few times and flap it around. Youll look stupid but it helps. Esp in those long 3 hour writing exams.

Buy an instrument and play it so that your writing hand is getting a decent workout.

I'm thinking similar to Trev. You should work into it. It's like playing guitar. Clench and then flick your hands out. Try it 200 times or so it will start to burn. I can do it for a lot longer with my left as it is my fretting hand. Give it a go.

So I'm guessing there could be two approaches:
1. Mind over matter
2. Subject your fingers/hand/arm to pain/stress over the course of the year so that they "get used to it" come exam time.

I'm not sure that my mind can handle the first one, but I might try (2). Actually, I found that last year when I was practising for an English essay I wrote three essays the night before until my fingers almost fell off...but come exam time the next day, I felt almost no pain at all - rather interesting really.

Btw. I might also try squeezing a stress ball...I've got stacks of those (not that I'm stressed or anything :))

I'd go for the second option, your mind can be a failure in stressful situations! :p

lol :p

Actually, quite often when I'm writing an English essay, my mind switches off and my hand does the thinking. It's an odd feeling to describe, but it's literally as if my brain isn't on.

But other than that...you might be in trouble if you don't rely on your mind during an exam :p

i just stretch my fingers and shake my hand a bit when it gets sore. but yeah, whoever said it's the least of your worries, so true. you're too busy stressing about finishing that you'll end up not caring at the time and just complaining majorly afterwards! holding a cold water bottle also helps a bit too so yeah, try that too. in fact, try it all in an extensive study, then tell future HSCers your results so that they may be comforted that, no matter what, their hands will always ned up hurting...

I've actually found that my forearm hurts more than my fingers, which surprisingly don't hurt as much as they used to. I think it might be the way I hold my pen, but that's not going to change since I've had the same grip virtually since kindergarten...

I'm used to writing for long periods now. My hand just goes numb after a while. 3 hour english lessons will do that to u.

3 hours???? When on earth do you do 3 hours of English in one day, let alone in one single lesson?
