Hello all,

Just wondering, if any of you had finite maths before, what is the final exam like? (UNSW of course..), I went to the last lecture and the lecturer didnt let slip of the exma format or such, so comes a question?

What kind of questions do they give in the final exam? Like the tute questions? Lotsa proofs? Direct usage of theories without complex proofs?

and what's the best way to cram 14 weeks of finite maths in.. say.. 7 days?

cheers

(yea, literally this semester I only gave ~3 hours of finite study just before midsession. needless to say, result was pathetic :/)

cram? sit down and start reading I guess.. and do the exercises.
My usual procedure for cramming:
1.read notes and examples.
2.do a few numerical/basic exercises
3.read again, in depth
4.try to outline proofs.
5.After every 2 or 3 chapters, go back and skim through the whole thing from the beginning, that would keep the picture intact.

Shouldn't be too difficult if you paid attention in lectures.

thanks, but im just curious as to how "proof-populated" the exam is. That is, do they just ask you to convert base-2 nums to base-10 (had enough during 1721 exam), or more proof-oriented questions (some real hard fermat theorem proofing for example)?

Anyhow, thanks a lot for that tip, greatly appreciated. Think that should be enough to get me started and motivated..

I can't remember this exam that well, but I remember it contained proofs AND number crunches (like decrypting RSA codes). Make sure you know how to prove everything ....

Maybe I should have gone to UNSW. I love decrypting RSA.

Nevertheless, the competition's better here. I'm talking freak of freaks - 99, 99, 100 in 3 of his 5 first year maths. I dunno about the other 2 though.
