FOOD police would enforce labels showing nutritional value on packaging and cigarette-style health warnings on alcohol under changes recommended for national laws. A report released yesterday to improve food labelling laws in Australia and New Zealand contains 61 recommendations, including dropping mandatory "per serve" columns while explicitly stating the inclusion of trans-fats and salt content.
The report, Labelling Logic, was commissioned by the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council in October 2009 and compiled by a panel of independent experts, led by former federal health minister Dr Neal Blewett.
Information about food safety would be of primary importance followed by preventative health, new technologies such as genetic modification and lastly consumer values like "free range".

"The crux of the review was to address the tensions between competing interests that drive food labelling policy and seek to resolve them," Dr Blewett said.
Some of the recommendations call for food manufacturers to voluntarily adopt proposals such as a traffic light front-of-pack labelling system before they are legislated.
Food manufacturers attacked the traffic light recommendation, arguing there was a lack of consensus on the best way to label food.
"The industry rejects traffic light labelling on the basis that it's badly understood by consumers and the system has been rejected by countries around the world," Australian Food and Grocery Council CEO Kate Carnell said.
The Federal Government has until December to respond to the recommendations.
The State Government has welcomed the review, which recommends fast food chains and vending machines declare energy (kilojoule) content - a move introduced in New South Wales last November which takes effect from February 1.
Under the recommendations, country-of-origin labelling would be tightened along with mandatory identification of any food prepared or treated with new technologies.
Alcoholic beverages would have generic health warnings including specific messages about the risks of drinking while pregnant. Alcoholic drink labels would also have to reveal their energy content.

Re: jesus fuck

Pretty funny that people actually care about this pointless shit, surely there's better stuff to argue about than how food's labelled.

i'm pretty sure it's becase companies "lower" the fat/sugar content of their products by reducing the serving sizes

Re: jesus fuck

companies should be allowed to lace their products with substances that will cause chronic illness and the law should not make them give any warning about it

~teh market~ will fix it because when thousands of people are suffering, they might stop buying it and the companies' profits will go down so that will make it all ok

There's no real incentive to be had in pumping foods full of bullshit but w/e if you want to think that all companies are hell bent on being evil, not on being profitable then I'm not going to interfere with your special time

Food is pumped full of bullshit, traditionally there's been regulation stopping food manufacturers from making health claims, this has been eroded by industry lobbying, now we have foods with probiotics cultures, acidophilus and shit, claiming to provide the same health benefits as certain drugs.

Look at folate. Pretty much only pregnant women may benefit from added folate, and even then only a small subset of pregnant woman are predisposed to having low levels of folate. There are adverse side effects of folate consumption. Yet it's in fucking everything, the whole population can acquire hugely excessive doses of this chemical.

Re: jesus fuck

Food labelling is legit. Reasonable to expect to know what goes in what you eat. Also it doesn't really distort the market as it imposes very small marginal costs on packaging companies to print a few extra lines. Alcohol and Cigarette labeling? I'm in favour of survival of the fittest. If you're going to drink/smoke you should be be prepared for the consequences. A good way to cull the stupid if you ask me.
