I'm really boreddd but curious abt this.

I just got my english marks back and there were 4 sections in this exam. My marks were --> Short Answer (6/10), Film (15/20), Poetry (10/20) and creative (8/10).
I was told that if i were to do adv eng i had to be top 50 ( i know i didn't though cuz my total mark was 39/60) T-T. However the highest in our grade was an 85% (51/60)

I was given frequency tables of the marks for Short answer, Film and Poetry but not creative. Is there any way to work out what the range of top 50 would be? or what i could put in excel to find it?

alsoo when analysing my film i didn't talk about dialogue, cuz i was told to never analyse dialogue in a film essay, however the only comment left on my essay was "Any diologue that could help support your claims." which left me a bit confused..
do i have to analyse dialogue?

It's best to have it as a bit of extra evidence. Try to 65:35 between film techniques and dialogue.

Maybe find the median all the sections added up and then try to find the upper quartile based on how the marks are skewed and that will probably be top 50

Just by looking at the distribution (not bothered to do the maths), it seems like you'd probably fall into the top 50. I'm guessing that your creative rank would be pretty high, so it balanced out quite well.
Also dang, it looks like your school marks pretty harshly... :blink2:

im not sure it would be possible to work out the top 50 exactly, because someone could have gotten say 10/10 in one section, or 0/10 in another (exagerrated but there are many different distributions that would fit the data)
however given that you're generally in the average for short answer, above average for film and creative, and about average for poetry, you're probably likely to be in the top 50

What if you just counted the "worst case scenario" where everyone's a god at english and the top 50 ppl all like maxed out their scores on the frequency table? That would mean pessimistically, 50th best score is 7/10, 13/20 and 14/20. Assuming roughly the same distribution for creative the 50th score is also 7/10. So in the worst case scenario, you'd need at least 41/60 to be in top 50, but realistically people who did well in some sections didn't do as well in others so it would probably be lower. Also bc the creative was approximated when probably it was a lower scoring section. So yeah there's a good chance you are in the top 50.
