Ink wells cost about $16 for good quality ink, and they last on average 1.5-2 years (that's with everyday use). You still come out cheaper, in the long run.

Actually,

If a normal biro lasts say, on average 2 weeks, and cost $2 each the cost at the end of the year will be $52, for two years $104.

With a fountain pen ranging from 60 - 100 dollars, and then having to pay for the ink your looking at $76 to $116. per year.

And thats just going off your assumption that a Biro only lasts a week or two, which I dissagree with.

lol you only buy the pen once... -_-

ink is $16 per 1.5-2 years...

EDIT: So the pen is $70, ink is $16... total $86 first year.. Fountain pen wins

But Biros do last me about a term lol.. I'm thinking of getting a Fountain Pen now hmm...

A GOOD fountain pen ranges that. That would then be, for example, $76-$116 in the first year.. and then only ~$16 per two years, if that, given that an ink well lasts longer than a year.

Uh, that is still more than the $56 you would pay for plain Biros. And if a Biro can last you a term then you are only paying 8 dollars a year if you can hold onto it.

In the first year, yes, but only in the first year. And if you only pay 8 dollars a year for biros (good luck), and then (effectively) 8 dollars a year for an ink well - wow, it comes out the same! And on the fountain pen's side, you have better/speedier writing and less chance of developing RSI!

Seriously, you have no idea what the hell you're on about.

Ha. This makes me laugh for a number of reasons.
Firstly, you are sticking up for a pen.
Secondly, I don't care that much I'm just trying to make a point and I clearly made it.
And lastly, and this is the funniest part, You are insulting me on the fact that "I don't know what i'm on about".

Oh no? I'm not a pen expert?

I guess I should say good bye to my future?

Well actually, you started off by insulting my choice of fountain pens (expensive! Wanky! Pretentious!) over your choice of poor-quality biros, so the onus is on you, dearest. And clearly, you don't know what you're on about, given you couldn't back up your arguments with very simple maths.

You cared enough to come into this thread and trash it with your frankly irrelevant and incorrect opinion on the subject. Strike two.

Sorry, Wanky? Prenentious? I think you should double check your facts, I never said that, dearest. And I did back up my argument with simple maths? Are you stupid? Or just pen obbsessed?

Actually, that was me. Get your facts straight.

And is this not a discussion board? I believe discussions need more than one person, and one opinion to have merit. It's of our opinion spending a substantial amount of money on a pen is ridiculous, and perfectly substantial reasons have been outline.

Freedom of speech. Look it up.

Apologies, statement retracted, it was indeed HarryC (but hey, you're both 09ers, and both extremely low in my opinion of intellectual ability. Thus, my quota of similarly low-brow insults is fulfilled).

And your maths were wrong, rachel2219, given that you assumed the one would be spending $70 on a new pen every year. Lol.

Finally, HarryC, this board is privately owned and doesn't actually operate under the auspices of "freedom of speech". By the same token that I don't go into the Death Metal thread in the Music forum and trash their music choices for being indecipherable noise, you don't really have any right to come in and disrupt a thread because you, in particular, feel obligated to act like a bogan.

Economics would disagree with you that a one-time large investment with little upkeep costs would beat a small but continuous investment with considerable continuing upkeep costs as a percentage of the initial purchase price.

:)

Again, a thread....on pens?

If by extremely low in my opinion of intellectual ability you mean I'm not an expert on pens by your standards, then you are right. I bow down to you, pen overlord.

What to do with all these bogans, talking about their opinions on pens.

There are threads on everything from books to Pokemon to politics to, yes, pens. Why do you care what people find interesting? If it's below your level of interesting conversation, then you're welcome to exercise your democratic right to NOT post.

So, how's the view up there from that high horse your on.

I'm sorry, I should be leaving this alone but I'm not. Who are you to insult our intellectual abilities, on the basis we disagree with your opinion? So, because we don't see things the same way as you, we're automatically "bogans"? You think your above others because your older than them?

If, by your account, we are unable to have our own opinions (I guess since we're so dumb, they wouldn't count for anything), then you calling us idiots just assists in elevating you to epic levels of hypocrisy.

Again, we are allowed to make a comment. At first I was simply fascinated that some people felt the need to spend money on pen's. Of course, you saw fit to jump on our backs and make personal attacks when we did nothing of the sort.

I guess this was the most action you see all day.

Because I find it extremely offensive. Just like going into a thread regarding, IDK, a recent Coldplay concert and saying "OMG COLDPLAY SUCKS YOU WASTED $150 HOW DOES IT FEEL" is regarded as offensive. Get the picture?

Have your own opinions. Have them elsewhere.

Let me put it this way: would you rather spend $900 on an old beat-up bomb car that only lasts a year, or $20,000 on a new car that you won't have to replace for 20 years, has a great fuel economy and you happen to think drives better?

Yes, because pens are so much like cars. Apart from the fact that they are different in every way, shape and possible form. They are two completely different things. Yes, I would spend more money on a car. A car has a positive impact on my life. It helps me get places in life.

And correcting my grammar? Way to assert your "intelligence". I'm surprised you fit through the door with your ego.

Whatever. I'm done. I don't want to end up banned over such a stupid argument. I do actually like this place, and it's helping me alot with Year 12. I just know now to steer clear of you.

Wow, You managed to not only point out, but also correct spelling mistakes. I bet you wish you could have used your magnificant seventy dollar fountain pen to do the corrections!

Have opinions elsewhere? Like we aren't allowed them here?

One last time, it's a fountain pen. A fountain.... pen. Key word being pen. As in a thread dedicated to pens. At first it was just funny, I didn't really care. I'm sure if one was curious it would help them out a little. But then you got all defensive, it was funny, and now it's just annoying because you think your better then everyone else, because you're older AND because you have a $70 pen.

You are a hypocritic know-it-all who thinks she is more intellectual then anyone younger then her. But hey you've got a fountain pen! So you've got that going for you.
