i read an article a week back that made all this debate redundant, if this is true its unbeleivable why its not more widely known:

"FINES issued by railway transit officers could be invalid because the officers do not have the power to demand an offender's date of birth.

They also lack the power to demand to see identification, meaning anyone pinched for fare evasion or smoking on a platform could give Mickey Mouse as their name and Disneyland as their address."

i'm never telling them my name now, and i'll only buy a ticket if its convenient.

I mean who really gives a shit about $1.70 its just the hassle of buying it that annoys me cos the ticket things are always fucked/long lines.
yes, but they have the powers of arrest, so they can detain you there until police arrive who do have those powers

Related story: I was on my way to Melbourne by train and had to get somewhere by 7:30am, so basically I had to leave from the Geelong train station taking the 6am, and then once in Melbourne take another train to North Melbourne. I needed two different tickets for this. Anyway, the second train leaves 30 seconds after the first train arrives at the station, so there is not enough time to buy a ticket. I get busted without a ticket for the second train and I'm like wtf. I explained the situation and they said it wasn't their problem. Now I have to pay a $160 fine but I'm unemployed with no income. WTF.

but if they don't have the power to ask for your name, then aren't they wrongfully detaining you then?

they're not detaining you on the grounds that they don't know your name, but on the grounds that you are travelling without a ticket. You have committed a crime, so they have the powers of arrest. The police can then come and get your name

Today I got to travel for free.

The ticket machine at Yennora got broken into last night so they were like "pay at destination lol" because they don't sell tickets through the window.

And when I got to Redfern I went out the gate and nobody said anything so fucked if I was going to buy a ticket.

I bought a maxibon instead.

What i'd like to know is why we havent adopted a system like that in Japan where if you miss a station, all you do is pay the difference at a machine inside of the ticketing gates.

It ensures that nobody receives a fine for what could be a simple mistake (falling asleep etc) whilst still having to pay for the extra travel. Thus, everybody is happy.

OH NOES!! AN IDEA!

I know, right?

It's so easy. It means people will always pay for tickets, and nobody gets fined for mistakes or if they change their mind.

You could still fine people for antisocial behaviour, so it's not like the guards would lose their jobs. Arguably, that's what guards SHOULD be paying most attention to, not tickets.

the thing is, the t-pass system would work if there weren't so many screw ups by the company handling it. i mean, it's exactly like the systems around the world: you buy a card, and top it up with credit. You use that credit to enter and exit the bus, as well as enter and exit train stations. Everyone wins (apart from blacks coz dey got aidz)

Yeah the company screwed it up.

Which is a shame for them because they could be making the big monies from it.

I love top-up card systems. So easy.

Who cares. It's a TRAIN PASS. Get over it.
Yeah, yeah...

It's the concept, not the object. You hear ppl saying:"It's not the money I'm worried about, but it's..."

Imagine if someone comes up to you and thinks they can claim something of yours...something you're sentimental about, with a really lame excuse.

I hate it how they're just after getting to their daily quota and money.

whenever I hear about people who successfully scammed their way out of tickets I'm always tempted to try it out for myself but then I don't because I can't afford to get fined...if I was in a position not to care that much about losing a couple of hundred bucks randomly I'd probably try scamming the system at least once.

ooh, temptation. :D

tbh better safe than sorry though.

i love watching the drunk bogans working their magic to get out of a ticket.
about a week ago i heard this guy say "i think i made a mistake. i told you my name was Andrew Taylor, it actually says James Brett on my I.D. Oops!"
Then to make things even funnier his girlfriend said she was just going to buy a drink and she never came back!
lol!

The reason why most of them are cunts is that they have a quota each week or so, so I guess they exploit that to get money. Pretty selfish in my opinion.

The thing that shits me the most is that they still fine SCHOOL-KIDS OBVIOUSLY going to school but they've lsot their train pass and are still awaiting a replacement.
Some school kids aren't entitles to a train pass. While it is cuntish, it makes sense.

That is true, but I was sitting there with nothing happening and it's not like I give off the aura of me being a cunt. I was well mannered infact.
