With take home exams ours are not accepted at all after due date.

I think we have a 5% for law. (which is a lot since they mark so fucking hard).
10% for marketing
20% for finance..

i forget the rest...

but yes, all public holidays amnd weekends are treated as 1 day late...

after 7 days the assignment will not be accepted at all...

I doubt she can get away with it. Usually it's a student's responsibility to know about the university timetable and dates. The lecturers at Melb Uni are told very specifically that they can't tell students when there are public holidays etc any way. This is done in order to avoid mistakes on the university's behalf. That system all the more suggests no one will be advantaged or disadvantaged by not being informed of dates b/c it's the individual's responsibility.

Your friend did get an extra day so to speak. If she doesn't get penalised, then it'd be kind of unfair on other students regardless of whether she used that day or not.

BTW... I'm also a Melb Uni student... and that's pretty much what some lectuers have told me. As I do law, assignments are worth half my subject marks. In that sense... I'm pretty certain about the policy.

I'd think a number of people would be screwed over by my mktg research subject individual critique. It was worth 10% and the late policy is pretty long, giving lots of examples. Then at the very end it says assignments worth 10% or less won't be accepted late.
It's so easy not to read the whole thing there and hand it in late.

i gathered that ... but is it reasonable to expect that the entire city and surrounds will be going to actually go to flemington, which is the very justification for the holiday?

does victoria also get an extra day off to commemorate the founding of the state like sa and wa etc get?

if so, i think sydney should get a couple of extra days off too ... i would like two of the days of the new-year's test matchs off please.

Many Australians have gambling problems, the Victorians are just doing something to make them all feel better by making everyone excited about gambling for that day of the year. You know tobacco and alcohol companies get done for advertising to little kids so I wonder how these guys get away with pushing gambling as a positive past time and even managing to get the govt to give people the day off. Melbourne cup, and going to the races in general, is far more of a social than a gambling thing.

You will find that most heavy gamblers gamble at a TAB, rather than dressing up pretty, getting the girl, buying her a nice rose to stick on her dress, clean the shoes, drive to a place which takes 50 minutes to find a park, and then watch a 3 minute race. Especially since the cup, for a gambler, is no different to any other horse race. There are plenty of other races for a gambler to go to at far more conventient times - especially since it's about the win for them, not about the event itself.

Unless you've discovered some kind of social gambling addict. 'Omg, I'm going to bet that Jane's wearing a bright red dress and a black hat. D'OH! I *know* I can guess it next time!'

Everyone has an opinion, unfortunately you just lost a lot of credibility by doing an ad hominem attack.

You have no idea about my background or knowledge of gambling or alcohol issues in society. You have no idea how many counsellors I work with in both normal society and in education who see these problems everyday. How about you list some of your credentials since you seem to be an expert?

To glorify an event where the main focus is gambling, is silly. Yes the focus is gambling, it's a horse race, most people are there for a horse race, don't deny it, you could have fashion parade wherever the hell you like, same with a social gathering. The government could give a public holiday for "spend the day with your family at the park" day and let people chose to attent the Melbourne Cup but no it is focused specifically around a horse race. I see the adults encouraging the kids to "pick a winner", you think that's being responsible? I see the kids there shouting for the horses to win with their tickets in hand, positive reinforcement for adults only send confusing messages to kids. Heck they even show it on the news.

Chances are every office or social circle has a sweeps for melbourne cup, but they don't for every other horse race. Chances are people are more likely to bet on the Melbourne cup than any other horse race during the year. Face it horse racing and gambling go hand in hand, don't try to give me this socialising BS because IT'S STILL GAMBLING focused. Those who aren't at the cup are watching when the race is on, you think they're watching the fashion parade? The fashion parade is at most a distant third behind any races and stats coverage. Most of the coverage for the day is focused on the horses, odds and how much people have gambled, most of the post coverage is focused on payouts and placements of the horses. Face it it's mostly about the horse race and gambling and squat about socialising and fashion.

Now lets try again, I await your rebuttal.
