yeah, for this question i wanted to know, how u can write the introductory paragraph.

"How has your understanding of events, personalities or situations been shaped by their representations in the texts you have studied?"

I think it was, it seems vaguely familiar :p

Well, how has your understanding been shaped...? remember this is under the topic of "telling the truth".

Do you think how you perceive/understand events, personalities etc is at all influenced by how it is told to you, and who is telling it to you? How so? Why would they be trying to influence your understanding?

Maybe someone else can...to be honest i'm starting to waste too much time on here doing year 12 work again.

Its easier for me to answer specific questions or help u with something u've actually written. I'm not going to start writing frontline essays again particularly since i dont have related material and can barely remember the episodes

1. Define what the topic means to you
2. Explain what you think of as the truth
3. Introduce what tests you use/what they show and why they'll be used by you
4. If you know the stance you're going to take, establish it here, otherwise say something like "as will be show in this essay..."

Ok, i'll try to give you an example, it won't be very good coz i havent done this for agesssss, so don't copy it and please improve on it but still here's my sad attempt:

"The depiction of events, personalities and situations is often distorted to suit the intentions of those who have the power to manipulate the truth. Frontline etc...Have shown that what society understands to be the truth is often a subjective, selective truth that has been presented in a way that furthers the purposes of those in control of the truth."

ok hows this:

Undoubtedly ones understanding of events, personalities and situations can be shaped by their representation. Our perception of the truth can be manipulated through various depictions, as the truth is an abstract concept which may be problematic at times. A prime text that deals with the whole notion of the misrepresentation of the truth by the media is the Frontline (composed by Rob Sitch et al) series. In addition, the Hollywoods blockbuster, Mad City (by Arnold Kopalson) and the poem Girl Reporter (by Phillip Hobsbaum), provides various other insights into the craving of media moguls to own the truth. These texts use a variety of techniques such as irony, contrast and camera techniques, in order to convey its ideas.

It's not a good idea to talk about the techniques in the intro though is it?

It depends on the question/the aspect you're addressing. You can't explore everything (well not adequately). Don't take my word for it though, i'm no good at english.

There's no hard and fast rule of what should/shouldn't be included in the introduction. I thought your introduction was good in introducing what you were going to write about and establishing the scope of your essay - thats the purpose of it. Again, there are tens of thousands of people writing the paper, each will have their own personal style/methods - do what *you* are comfortable with and what serves your purpose.

It's probably not too good an idea to elaborate too much into the particular techniques and all the other detail of your material in the intro, but a fair synopsis like what you did should be fine :)

Don't worry bout the teacher though. My English teacher last year was a shocker - luckily frontline can be generally picked up from reading the syllabus and watching the vids a fair few times. :p

mmm... i don't know, they just introduced what they were going to talk about with techniques, didn't go into them. i spose it could be ok. if exemplar responses have done it possibly it's ok (but realise, they wont get marked down for 1 little thing like that if the rest is good, whether it's good or bad)
