You'd have to do a Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS), then all the internship and residency stuff (bit hazy about it since I don't do medicine), then you can specialise in dermatology.

My friend does medicine at newcastle and she said it goes something like this...

You need to do MBBS either undergrad(5-6yrs) or postdrad(4years) and after that you will get a 1yr internship, following the internship you do the specialisation in a residency which takes about another year and THEN you start specialisation

goodluck with having no life :p

no im joking, if you're really set for it and dedicated then go for it, be prepared to dedicate your life to medicine though

no one can predict your uai..it all depends on how much effort you're willing to put in. Have you sat the UMAT? becuase you can't enter undergraduate med without it and getting a good mark

some people aren't concerned with a life like that, to many a career is more important

12/13 years? That's no good, by the time you grad you will be married with kids catching a bus home with school books.
By the time you fully qualify.

It's not like you don't work and get paid as an intern.

by the time you're fully qualified...~40yr old
but like Templar mentioned , you'll be working through to that entire time, you start getting paid work after you graduate from med school.
and i mean even then...when you say "when i finish dermatology", you never finish it as such, i mean you finally specialise but even then when you start working AS a dermatologist there are always new technologies you have to be aware of, constant changing treatments, you're always educating yourself...travelling to conferences and forums...just like any career really, but within any health career it really never ends.

*sigh* Stop portraying everything as so hard/impossible.

There are 3 spots for 1st year advanced training in queenland alone, so that would be there would be more than 2-3 nationally. The derm training is 5 years. So basically 6 yrs of med, 2 years of internship, then 5 years of training. So you could be done as early as 30. But you are getting paid for the last 7 years of the training anyway.

I am not portraying everything as so hard/impossible (velox: ur not ure sister.. she has done it all u havent yet)
..im being realistic.. noone mentioned the number of places.. stop thinking its so easy.. as well there are far more other specialty places.
u need to get in to med 1st.. i think we know lots of ppl that failed that the 1st time.. even present posters are no exception..
it is the smallest recognised medical college in australia..
300 fellows for dermo.. vs 11000 for GP vs 700 for Ophthalmology. (2005)

its 3 spots but they only filled 2 places in qld.. they didnt have enough acceptable applicants...

correctly

now lets be realistic.. most ppl do more yrs of RMO before choosing a speciality.. lik up to 4 yrs.. cos u pick and choose if u get rejected.. .. and they lik when u know more stuff lik other postgraduate degrees and

u also forget that ppl goto grad med programs or do employment.. ure assuming that they are 17 too.. when they start.. that realli only happens in WA... otherwise the mean is 18-19

the numbers will change by 2014.. cos there will be more medical graduates.. but whether we need more speciality places in dermo is another thing..

lets go with this.. dun limit ureself to just dermatology.. its NOT hard .. its just there are so many more very interesting specialities that u should look at.. and also the more u study the more experience and clinical experience ull get.. like sexual health medicine has some dermatological practices.. ..

if u look at GPs lots have OB/GYN certificates so that they could use that skill... dun limit urself..

NB... i have a personal bias against dermatology as a subject too..its dull and its uninteresting.. it puts me to sleep.

That was a cheap shot. This has nothing to do with my sister? Since when have I said anything is easy? :) I haven't!. I got the information from the links you specified anyway, besides you have just proved your last post was inaccurate by posting the proper figures. 2-3 spots nationally as you said, is very different to 20 spots nationally. In the last 50 posts about medicine, I doubt you have portrayed one good aspect about it. Naturally it is overrated, but the constant downplaying of the degree/job/conditions, is quite discouraging to people who have no exposure to the job. Why not give them an open opinion not just a biased view of *your* experiences. If you look at my last post it specifically reads 'you could be done as early as 30.' Now tell me what does that mean? (keyword being could)

I say to the original poster, if you really want to go down this path, seek professional advice, dont listen to 16-23 year olds who haven't had enough exposure.

HAHAHA yeah I took offence that i made EVERYTHING look hard.. when i felt it was just dermo.. ppl dun realise that many medical students will end up GPs (60+ %).. so they need to be ready for that

no i am of the opinion that too many of my classmates (high school and uni) dropped out cos they werent ready for certain aspects ...

Here is a truth.. if u did 3 yrs of medicine at a uni with an integrated curriculum .. u get little to no credit if u transferred out to another course even B.MedSc or B.HSc..
ppl that transfer from BLaw to BAs still get 1-2 yrs covered.. its just not the same..

I dun portray many good aspects because ppl know them..
ppl know why they would love being a doctor/medical student..
but
they dun realise that some ppl have breakdowns and shit after they come into contact with their 1st real patient . or that communications as a subject could cause u to fail a semester even tho ur science is fine... or alternatively the depressed suicidal patient that made u feel so disturbed after u talked to them.. (watching ure mate cry is barely fun).

its far too elevated as a career when the work conditions are not that great...
-pay is decent but not IB.. considering what gets paid most.. its not what ppl think
-respect is nice.. but the teaching is hard to get...
-you help ppl.. but u hav the potential to harm them too..
-stupid work hrs and high cholesterol levels are badges of honour(!) thats sooo stupid... no other careers would tolerate those things for so long..
-alcohol and drugs are rampant...
-its fun.. but in the most nerdiest way possible.. mistakes are deadly even as an intern.
- its consumes ure life... because ppl are everywhere...

of course.. i like it.. but its cos i think that the pros outweigh the cons.. but honestly... lots of students cant figure why we tolerate the stupid things.. couple of the 1st yrs were like "this is nothing lik we expected" (both good and especially the bad).. of course cos ppl like to glorify the career.. its not always like tat ..

yes definately talk to a practicing dermatologist... if u can... that would be the ideal.. we can only go off opinions of others and statistics..
