ATi kicked nVidia's butt during the disastrous FX era. Then when nVidia released the Geforce 6800 series the tide was turned.. quite dramatically. First of all ATi didn't include SM3.0 support on their X800s so longevity was sabotaged. Then they only included 12 pipelines for their X800Pros while the 6800GT had the same as the flagship 6800 Ultra. ATi was forced into launching the X800XT premature because if they didn't nVidia would of had a massive headstart in sales and media support. However the problem was it was a complete paper launch for ATi.. the cards weren't ready for mass distribution. Few people were able to actually get their hands on one. I was one of the more fortunate ones.

Now ATi is in trouble again for the 7800GTX seems to kick butt.. according to HardOCP. As for clock speed.. it's not as relevant for this gen, as it seems nVidia has gone the optimisation road instead, squeezing more performance out of each clock cycle. Image quality is a huge bonus, with HardOCP claiming 30% improvement over TWO 6800 Ultras in SLi for Doom 3. This card enables you to also play 4xFSAA in virtually any game out (besides titles like Doom 3 and BF2 where you'll get crap frame rates unless you go down to 2x).

Another thing, the 7800GTX incorporates version 2 of their SM3.0 hardware.. and ATi hasn't even a card out yet with SM3.0.

ATi probably lost the last generation war.. and at the moment it seems to be losing this one too. But the R520 is gonna be launching supposedly in a few months.. so watch out for it.

I was thinking about getting a 7800.. but then I just realised how severely bottlenecked I'd be by my 64 3200+.. infact a friend did some CPU scaling tests and found that supposedly his AMD 4000+ was bottlenecking his 6800 Ultra.. so in terms of raw performance there would be no point in me forking out $891 for one of these new babies. Plus I'd have to get rid of my current non-PCI-E skt 754 setup.. get a new mobo.. totally cbf. I'll wait till the next gen.. or unless someone wants to buy my X800XT off me for $700+ (which surprisingly is what the card is retailing at.. infact to me it seems most are still retailing around $750-$900.. a meager depreciation over already 1 year).

Oh and the AMD FX-57 is getting released tomoz. AMD is also also promoting it actively for OCing (wtf).. buy it if you wanna waste $1,500.

I know this kid who's getting a Athlon 64 4500+, 2GB DDR400, twin Gf7800GTX SLi system. Overkill to the max. Very, very, very spoilt kid. Apparently his lawyer mum won some case.. so now they've got more bucks to waste.

I wouldn't go for that either. Much rather get a Venice core 3800+, 1GB, Gf7800GTX.. and maybe SAVE a few grand for you know.. other stuff, rofl. I mean wtf is the point of getting 2 7800s.. WOW LOOK AT ME I CAN PLAY BF2 @ 4xTSAA instead of 2x!!!!! Dolt. Hate spoilt brats like that (okay I'm just jealous I have to buy my own hardware but still.. completely unnecessary overkill).

Edit: The current X2s aren't actually that great for games. Because today's games are single-threaded, gamers who are seeking to break the limits on application performance is still better off with processors like the FX series. AMD plans to introduce a dual-core version of the FXs when multi-threaded software games are available to take advantage of its benefits. In the meantime, they're just gonna keep scaling up the FXs.

How do the FX's perform for photoshop and whatnot, i hear its not too bad at all, might save me quite a bit when upgrading next, especially if the 939 compatibility thing is true.
