If he had been gaoled or fined or ordered to do community service because of it then that would be an attack on free speech, when your fighting a war and you have a choice between two generals, one who will say helpful things and one who will not it isn't an attack on liberty to choose the one who will keep his mouth shut.

It's about making everybody else scared to speak up.

The General's comments were petulant. Any President would have done the same thing.

This is the military of the United States of America (and ignoring current wars, probably the last hope of the world). As you can imagine, the position entails a certain amount professionalism. The President has also stated correctly, debate is welcome but division is not.

McChrystal has a right to freedom of speech, and Obama, as his employer, has a right to sack or reprimand him for violating a code of conduct.
