This may seem like a dumb question but I have no idea. If I get an offer for mid-year entry for a course at a university that I'm already attending, is it pretty much the same as transferring from one course to another at the end of the year, or is it completely different?

Depends on what course and which uni, but yeh it's pretty much like transferring at the end of the year but you deal with less units.
