A 20-year-old woman has died after an out-of-control car driven by a learner driver crashed into a group of people waiting for a bus in Sydney's south.
"She hit the gutter in front of the paper shop and then wiped out two females, which I believe were sisters, a six-month baby in one pram and her sister had an 18-month-old son holding his hand, she wiped them out and then smashed into people at the bus stop.
"There were two bus seats there full, people waiting to get a bus, older ladies and gentleman, and she ran them all over.
"I seen a baby six months' going through the air about five feet high, he was still strapped in his stroller and landed on the road.
"I told my wife to take my son away because he was scared there was bodies all over the road, there was bodies everywhere.
"I just ran over and grabbed the baby, he was still seatbelted into his stroller.
Two women aged 30 and 20 are in St George Hospital with critical chest and head injuries, an ambulance service spokesman said.
Five other people hurt in the smash are in a serious condition, with a range of injuries including broken legs and hip and pelvic injuries, he said.
Two people suffered minor injuries, and were described as "walking wounded".
The victims have been taken to St George Hospital, the Prince of Wales Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Canterbury Hospital.
Supt Peter McErlain, of St George Local Area Command, said Kogarah town centre was full of people when the accident happened.
"It is an extremely tragic situation, something you wouldn't expect while waiting to catch a bus," he said.
