o_O One of my friends is in PF this semester... because he converted to the new BBus/BScIT course and had to learn java (instead of .NET).

I'd just like to note that from my experience, you won't really need to use the textbook much for most IT subjects (unless you need to do specific exercises from the book, which is not really common in IT). For subjects like programming, there are plenty of free (and legal) resources available online to aid you in your programming in Java, .NET or whatever you may be learning. Most technical subjects in IT are best learnt by 'doing' rather than 'reading', so you'll find the lab exercises and the practical examples online a lot more useful in your learning than reading the prescribed textbook (which should be covered in the lectures anyways).

As an ex-tutor, I should probably encourage you to get the book though, but I'm just stating my own personal opinion :p

One of my friends requested a transfer from BBus/BComp to BBus/BScIT and it seems to be mostly one-to-one. He lost 6cp from Programming Fundamentals (#31508 pre-2007 which was .NET Programming) and has to do Programming Fundamentals (#31267 post-2007 which is Java Programming); but that's about it. He told me he should finish on time (4 years) anyways.

See Jim Underwood (jim@it.uts.edu.au) if you are thinking about transferring from the old course to the new course. I'm considering it, but it can wait until the end of the year.
