The sum of dimensions of a box with a square base is 60cm. Find the dimensions that will give the box a maximum volume.


Not that i'm having problems with doing these applications of calculus, but the "sum of dimensions" means what exactly? (i think perimeter, but then again i'm not sure)

Don't really need someone to guide me through this step by step (although by all means go ahead if you happen to be bored) but just tell me what the "sum of dimensions" mean.

If the box were rectangular with a square base I'd let the shorter sides be x and the longer sides be y.
Sum of dimensions probably means find the total surface area of the whole box.

i.e Surface Area = 2x2 (The two square bases) + 4xy (The four rectangular sides)

That's how I would approach it, then make them in terms of one variable.

Yes, this is what it means. The dimensions of an object are the x, y and z co-ordinates, or, if you like, length, width and height.
