I am writing some contextual preamble for an assignment on texts and human experiences and I was wondering, how would you describe Orwell's zeitgeist. Of course, there are things like the soviet union and such, but what else was going on in the late 1940s that is pertinent to a discussion about human experiences?

Changing values around sexuality; still sex was something repressed. Cult of personalities were emerging such as Hitler and Stalin which instilled a fear of charismatic leaders. England still had well defined class hierarchies where the working class was firmly at the bottom. Those are a few that could be explored.
