Jess, you sound jaded with the tutoring industry and I share your disillusionment. To give you a bit of a background to myself, I started Talent 100 because, as a top-performing student, I felt there were certain methods that you can use that make you very good at standardized testing. absolutely everything in the company is directed to that end. By benchmarking off the best, we've made it very easy to get good marks, and the proof of it is in the pudding - our student are on phenomonal results at the moment. 35% of yearly students over 99 is my prediction and 65% over 97. I don't believe this is something that is matched by the current crop of tuition centres.
Let me first correct some of your misconceptions
Misquote
You actually misquoted me. I never claimed that Sydney Tech came in the top 10 of the state for Physics. I said that my students at Sydney Tech came in the top 10 of
their school. This is no exaggeration. In the most recent trials, I can confirm I had two sydney grammar boys coming in the top of their school with 90 plus (which is awesome for grammar). The two syd tech also came in the top 10 (the other came in the top 10 but for his option). Out of a class of about 8, having 5-6 in the top 10 of their school is pretty good.
I think you might have got this mixed up with our tutors. Alex Stoyanov who came 1st in Physics 2007 works for us, as do numerous other state rankers.
Homework Policy
At Talent 100, our homework is designed to help you succeed in examinations. IN fact, our homework is 100% examination style. That's why our students do so well, because whether they like it or not, after a year with us, they've practically sat and been conditioned to 30-40 exams.
That having been said, we follow a UAI first policy. That means if you have an assessment, that must obviously take priority since it counts for your UAI. However, we expect our students to catch up at their earliest convenience for their own benefit, not ours.
Elite Students?
I'd also like to correct this perception of Talent for top students or the 'over 99' bunch. I profile the UAIs of all our students and what I can say definatively is that our system has improved the marks of studetns of all abilities. A lot of the students I profiled on 94+ are going to hit 96-97, and the 99s will go above 99.5s It's not about being elite, its about getting you to the next level and to maximise your mark, given your own capabilities and circumstances.
Competition in the HSC
I really believe too much is made of competition in the HSC. Life is competitive. If you've study economics, you will realise that any time you have limited resources with unlimited wants, it is the most efficient producers who dominate the market. Likewise, Universities are rationing limited supply of places, so it is the most effective students that will get those spots. And why not?
If you can put your head down, study hard, and get into the course and proffession you want, you've learnt a very good skill in life - that hard work, determination, and being results-oriented can get you far.
Is Tutoring worth it?
I think this is the question that a lot of people ask? I can tell you as someone who just finished B Comm/B Law that a good edcuation is priceless. If you're not too precious about getting into a good course, then it might not be.
But if you are, you need to get a good UAI and there's two ways to do that. You can do this through your own efforts. There's certainly nothing wrong with this - I actually scored a UAI of 100.00 through painstaking research and dedication.
Alternatively, you can leverage your time by getting some good help. There are many tuition centres out there. What I'd say for Talent, is that you can be 100% sure you're getting help from the top of the state. That's actually why I think our students outperform peers of similar abilitiy, and peers in other tutoring centres. unique
The question of whether tutoring is worth it, is the same as whether a good doctor or a good accountant is worth it. It depends on your situation. if the cost of tax savings is higher than the accountant's fees, then it is definatley worth it. Likewise, if the benefit of getting a top UAI and being able to become a doctor, lawyer, banker etc, is greater than the cost of tuition courses, it's well worth it. You'll make your money back in the first 6 months of your job!.
