I know this is a really vague question, but what history subjects are good to do, particularly in first year? I want to do ancient, modern, heritage studies and maybe archaeology, and everything sounds good!

Particularly, what are Modern European History, Renaissance and Reformation, Introduction to Archaeology and Power and Persuasion like?

Also, should I take Ancient Greece in first year if i want to do Greek democracies later? I did a lot of ancient Greece for the HSC, but I just don't want to be behind for second year.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Modern European History is a fantastic course. I did it back when I was in first year (back in 2001!) when Ian Cameron was teaching it. It's being taught by Robert Aldrich now, I had him for most of my honours year seminars and he's absolutely terrific.

If you take it in first semester, I would strongly suggest taking 20th Century politics and culture in second semester - the two together are a really strong introduction to a whole lot of theory and western thought, plus it's taught by Judith Keene who's an awesome lecturer.

For non-first year courses, I would recommend anything with Judith Keene (most notably her course on the Spanish Civil War, it's considered to be one of the best courses at the uni), Robert Aldrich (especially his Histories of Sexuality third-year honours prep/fourth-year honours course, it's amazing), Stephen Robertson and of course Shane White's Black Experience in the Americas. For Australian history, Penny Russell and Maggie McKeller are the way to go.

There's so many great courses to choose from - the only problem is that you can't do all of them!

I did Renaissance and Reformation, and I loved it -- possibly my fave UoS last year besides ASNS1101 (Intro to Chinese Civilisation -- great historical/cultural UoS). The lecturer, Margaret Sampson, is great -- very accommodating to her students -- and she really knows her stuff. If you just show up to all the lectures and tutes, you should easily pass (they're very detailed), but doing the extra recommended readings is definitely worth it for a better mark. Each week usually consists of at least one primary source (e.g. Machiavelli's The Prince, parts from King James I's Basilikon Doron), and/or secondary sources, usually journal articles, all provided in a reader. There are also movie screenings sometimes to complement tutorial topics.

If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask... I think I was meandering a bit in my post.

Thanks to all for the help. :) Please keep it coming!
DeepDarkRose, what other subjects are you doing? I know almost no-one who's doing arts at Sydney next year, so I'm trying to find people who might be in my classes!

hahahah yeah history is really sexy :) who wouldnt want to spend three years of their life learning about old dead guys? lol
wow you dont know anyone else doing arts? two of my close friends are gonna do arts too, and i've heard of several others from my school (fort st high). i was thinking of doing foundations for ancient history: greece, power and persuasion: near east and rome, renaissance and reformation, and maybe that middle ages one. Hard to decide between that and the mythology one in classical studies. argh too many choices!!!

zOMG, DeepDarkRose, Malfoy and Wizard: total hottie female history students...SCORE!
I'm doing Renaissance & Reformation as an elective in my B Cummerce (II) this year. Totally sex all of you.

I did "Europe in the High Middle Ages" last year, "Middle Ages 500-1500" would be the equivalent this year. The reason I do history even though I do commerce is cos History is totally sexc, the women that do it are totally sexc and since I'm totally sexc IT JUST MAKES SENSE. That and I'm fuckin good at it and enjoy it. (I got a HD)

Here's something I wrote previously:

I was a tad inebriated when I wrote that at 3am so if it doesn't make sense...sorry. :(
Ugh. I hated that subject. It was just so damn boring. I went to the lectures to sleep. Barely passed.

I wasn't enthralled by the lectures/tutorials either, jhakka but I found the assignments interesting enough and did them fairly easily, hence the HD.

While we're on the topic of good history subjects, I was just wondering if anyone could refer me to some good Australian history courses for second (or above) years? The course advisor today suggested that I make sure I do some Australian history at some point, but I find it really, REALLY dull.

yeh it COMPLETELY agree with you! OMG!
i remember doing it in yr 10 for the SC and jeez it was a BORE.
i wouldn't do it.
i bet ya it's probably all politics , gold rush, assimilation n all that CRAP
stick with good old Europe.

well according to the handbook a wk consists of 2 lectures + 1tutorial - so minimum is probably 3 hours (if each is one hour each)
i'd say approx 3-4 hrs cos no way can it be more than that for a junior subject.

Auf wiedersehen

I don't know how interesting any of the Units on Australian history would be, but lately I've been becoming very interesting in Australian history. I guess I must have made the fundamental (although in many cases, missing) connection between Australian history and Australia now. ha! So now I'm interested in Australian history especially since federation and a bit earlier (1880) because I'm starting to see more than ever how knowing my history will fill in my knowlege gaps about the present. I now think that a thorough knowlege of modern Australian history is essential to being smart in an Australian Arts student/academic context. Think of the depth it could add to political/social/legal issue discussions and debates. So anyway, these have been my latest insights/rantings. Oh, and I'm still heavily into European history, particuarly since 1500 with the roots of (and emergence of some) the nation state. The rennaisance seems very interesting too, and I'll be sure to get around to it.

Apparently you have more chance of being hired as a history teacher if you do it. I'm hoping to take one class right at the end of uni, and have that as my Australian component, because it's so dull. Politics, I like, but the year 9 and 10 syllabi are out of touch and I don't particularly wish to revisit them.

yeh well, i guess if you're considering a career here in Australia, studies in australian history are well, a prerequisite and/ or beneficial.
But i don't see much use for it, for i do not have much of an interest in having a career here in Australia (history wise) - Europe is much more rich in ancient/modern history- There are more jobs there for graduates with history n a 2nd language.
Besides, Australia is too hot for me.

Auf Wiedersehen.
