It is official. Google now owns Youtube.

News Article

Despite the fact the youtube has yet to make a profit, google bought the 1.5 yr old company for 1.65 billion dollars. But this is BAD! it means that youtube will be commericialised. It will also probably mean that much of the copyrighted stuff (e.g. music videos and episodes of shows) will be taken off. However it does mean that the two twenty year old founders of Youtube are worth 1.65 billion. WOAH.

What do you think?

I think its really bad. Commercialisation means ads ads ads. And all the quirkiness will leave the website.

Well you can't really blame the co-founders. I mean they're probably a few years out of uni...then all of a sudden BAM $1.65 billion in 18 months. Who wouldn't turn down that kinda offer :p

I can't find it online but there was an interesting talk a couple of weeka ago by a guy who survived the first dot com boom and is now very rich and owns a NBA team in the US (i think) he said youtube was massively over-valued and that whoever takes youtube over would drown in a sea of copyrght lawsuits.

Mark Cuban?

Yes i think Google itself is overvalued, its main source of income advertising is plagued with click fraud (Businessweek). But I don't see why Google would be sued cause no one is suing Youtube as of today and they simply remove contents if there are any copyright infringements and complained by its copyright oweners. I think Google can continue the same policy (absolving itself all responsibility for contents uploaded by users) like Youtube did.

It's actually AUD2.2billion, in case anyone's wondering. (US1.65 million)

You can check out the YouTube ppl announcing it on their website. Man, they can't wipe those smiles off their face!

Personally, I think Google's getting more and more evil. I don't care what they say their motto is (do no evil) but they're doing exactly what they've said they won't do. Why else are they buying in any possible rivals? They even bought some CSE PhD student some months ago just b/c he wrote a search algorithm (or rather, working on it) that could well rival Google's. Google = evil - there's no denying it (though won't stop me using their search - they've yet to stretch their hands to Asia though. They all seem to use Yahoo over there)

Youtube has been in some fairly dodgy situations, but for the most part they have been resolved... in fact i think Fox or NBC (not sure which one) decided in fact to cooperative with the delivery of content.

Google video does much the same thing, and to my knowledge they haven't really had many problems with copyright - mostly just removal. And YouTube won't change, they were already using Google Ads for the msot part anyway...

As for google being evil, I don't agree; for one they actually treat their employees properly, and they employ young, ambitious, intelligent people. Of course they want to dominate the market :p And yeh, UNSW was boasting about that search algorithm as far back as last year...
