If google released an IM program better than MSN messenger (which i think is the dominient program).

who would convert?

i have doubts this will be a successful venture for google, unlike gmail, there isn't
really anything that could blow us away in IM.

MSN has a shitload of a head start on it, and having to convert would suck ass.

Screw Mico$oft. Of course I'd use it.

Anyway, there's a possibility they'd sort of make it like trillian in that it could talk to other clients.

I like aim more than msn - but I think if google took on its own IM program, they should take elements from all the available ones like msn, aim and icq - I'd love if MSN had a direct connection feature like AIM does and if MSN had the feature to be invisible as to appear offline but still allow you to send messages to people like AIM does..so yeh..I think there are a few ways they could make a 'superior' instant messaging program.

If Google did such a thing, my prediction is that they would make it so that you can add msn contacts to your "google" list.

yeah true, cos a lot of people use msn cos its simple so it would take a while for people to start using a new im program

I would go with DA flow. If the majority of people moved to Google then yes, I would too. This is just the same as the ICQ/MSN conversion that happened a few years ago. I used to only be on ICQ but when the majority of people transferred to MSN, I did as well. I open ICQ up occasionally still to see who's online. Most of the people are on MSN simultaneously anyways. I only use it to chat to friends/family overseas. :)

MS had a shitload start on IE (6 versions in fact), and firefox (v0.9.3) still kicks its ass to the moon and back... in my view if the IM client had all features, rock-solid code and 24/7 uptime, 128-bit encryption, a secure web-version, compatibility with existing IMs and enough support - i'd switch.

i wish mozilla.org made an open-source multiple-IM client with all of the above, in line with their firefox and thunderbird. :(

i voted no because i couldn't be stuffed to swap over with everyone else still on msn

but if i could use msn contacts and if it had some great features, why not
