so what is a grade point average?

• what do they range from?
• whats normal?
• how hard is it to get a gpa of over 5.0 in first year bachelor of science?

It's basically your overall mark from everything you study. The scoring system depends on the university, at USYD it goes from 0 (gtfo) to 7 (godly). The average is probably around 5, and isn't be too hard too achieve above that. I managed to do it in engineering even with a fail.
