errrm if all of your units are 1st year units then
HD - 7
D - 6
C - 5
P - 4

you average your grades and that's your GPA

yeh at mq, i think it is.

HD - 4
D - 4
C - 3
P - 2
CP - 1
F - 0

they use this for internal transfers, etc. for transferring between uni's they would probably 're-calibrate' them as golfstick said.

Well according to what you guys said:

My GPA out of 7 is 6.125
My Macquarie GPA out of 4 is 3.875

Why is a HD and D the same? :p

It's because you have little chance of getting a HD at Macq because they're stingy, and don't scale you enough.. unlike other unis.

You're GPA should be a comparison with those at your uni, in particular your course.

Good scaling, lol. Depends really..

Scaling ensures that marks are similar over the years (the ones seen on transcript) to reflect a candidate's achievement, or lack of.

If you do poorly, you'll be scaled.. but perhaps not into passing depending on how poorly.

Just do Advanced subjects. they scale well. In Science, you have a chance of doing many advacned subjects in first, second and even more in third year. I think you can pick up to 4/5 advanced subjects in one year for your major for UNSW science.

University is not the HSC... Take the units that suit you, not those that 'scale well'.

Of course! But I'm saying you should choose the advanced version of the same subject.
e.g. Choose Biochemistry (advanced) over Biochemistry.

Only if you are comfortable with that level. There is little point in going in over your head with an advanced unit if the ordinary unit would suffice. But, each person has a different view on the matter (and different goals).

not necessarily, i had a choice of the basic or an advanced version of a subject, the basic i hope to come out with at least a D, the high one i wouldn't have, therefore it was better to choose the basic because i will get a higher gpa.

I think it will come out about the same. Advanced will scale up one level anyway. so your credit will be scale to a D.
