This is what gets to me:

"Studying for the HSC begins with the Preliminary year, usually Year 11."

and obviously the "HSC" stands for HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE

Write 2012, not 2011, yes this can cause a problem depending on what you're applying for. You might start STUDYING for the HSC in preliminary, but you're attempting it in 2012 because that's when things start to COUNT towards it,tests assesments etc...they don't count in 2011 unless you accelerated a subject, which you haven't so you started to ATTEMPT the HSC in 2012. Does that sound more logical to you?
