It was really depressing i was in maths today and the head teacher came out with all this stuff about how if were doing advanced english (which i am) the workload will be too much and we'll fail maths, if you scored under band 5 in the school certificate, we'll fail the course, if your doing extension 1 (which i am) the minimum amount of homework you have to do a week (excluding studying) is 22 hours...just to finish the course.
She also seems to think that an 80% in 2 unit will give you around the same UAI as a 55% in general maths, and we wont get into uni.
I scored mid band 4 in the SC, though in the 2nd semester i started studying for tests and managed myself a couple of 100% which raised my confidence no end...

Anyway i was wondering how much merit i should give to all this, should i drop anything? as its got me quite terrified :worried:

What? 22hrs a week? People who've gotten 99.95 UAIs (I know for a fact) studied a total of 2-3 hours a day which was spent on ALL subjects.. so thats 14-21 hours a week? And your in year 11? .......

80% in 2u =/= 55% in gen maths, in terms of calculation of uai.

hmm...i dont really remember passing many 3u maths exams, and it still worked out for me. depends on the difficulty of your exams/peers/etc.

I totally agree with that, if you're doing general maths, you really should be aiming for a minimum of a low band 5 (80%+), otherwise you are going to suffer from the adverse scaling effects due to a poor mark in the subject. 80% in maths 2u is alright, but you should really be aiming for band 6 if you want to do well. 55% in gen maths really means you're not putting very little effort into it...

I can tell you that NONE of that is true.
- English is compulsory, so there is obviously going to be a workload for English, but it will barely impact on your Maths unless you are terrible at organising yourself
- School Certificate is NEVER indicative of your position for the HSC. You can improve dramatically from Year 10, while on other hand you can fail miserably from Year 10. Your results reflect on that fact
- Minimum amount of homework 22 hours a week??!!! That's more than 3 hours of homework per day!!!!! That is only true, if you're like super slow at doing exercises!!!! Dude, I do Extension 2 Maths and I NEVER spend that much time on homework per week. Even with all the average weekly homework of my subjects put together, it hardly goes past 15 hours a week!!!
- 80% in 2 unit Maths is actually like 85% in General Maths. If you check out the stats from the UAC, it's all there in black and white
- You can get into university regardless of how shit your UAI is. As long as you HAVE A UAI, you can qualify for university entrance. With subjects like Maths Extension, you can't possibly fail

If there's one important thing I had learnt in Year 11, it is this. NEVER take advice from a teacher. They only things they specialise in, are the subjects they teach. They do not specialise in careers nor are they specialised in counselling. They will use scare tactics to motivate you to work harder and it is often for THEIR OWN best interests, not necessarily yours, so they won't have to bother putting in the extra effort teaching higher level courses. I can tell you that it is now a rare sight to see committed teachers do everything in your own best interests.
Follow your own interests. It's up to you. It's YOUR HSC. It's YOUR UAI. It's YOUR subjects. It's YOUR committment. It's YOUR life; not somebody else's. YOU decide for yourself and don't let others influence you. That way, you'll learn from your own mistakes, which is better than falling victim to a teacher's mistake....

dont have an attitude like "i'm gonna fail" if you do then you will. you just have to learn to organise your time and everything will be fine =]`i know people who did extension history, modern history, 4unit maths and 4unit english and still did REALLY well.

i dont think some of the teachers i had were using scare tactics to motivate me. everything they said is true and they were doing it in my best interest, so that i get the best result possible. they were also very commited. my english teacher use to hold afterschool classes to help us with problems we were having ..

Well you're either:
- successfully convinced and fooled by your teacher(s) to think that they are doing this in your best interests
or
- lucky enough to have the few highly committed high school teachers that are left in this state

One more thing: Don't believe anything that comes out a teacher's mouth about scaling. In most cases it is false and misleading information. Very few teachers actually know how the scaling procedure works. Do the research yourself. I've heard too many myths about scaling from teachers, students and parents these days with no real evidence to back it up at all. 55% General Maths = 80% 2 unit Maths???!!! That is definitely a made-up statistic because it's relatively easier to get high marks in General Maths than in 2 unit Maths. If what that head teacher said was true, then everyone doing General Maths will have a great scaling advantage over those doing 2 unit Maths - which is obviously not true.
I'm sure many people who post on this site will know some truths behind the scaling process more than teachers.

Agreed. Don't believe anything your teacher said. Instead, work hard yourself, get those good marks, achieve your goals, nail the HSC. :)

I got a similar speech from my head teacher too. I'm doing three units and he just kept on hinting that it would be very easy to drop to general math...:mad1:

But he did say that the 2unit people were a little disadvantaged because the 3 unit people are doing the same course and therefore the 2unit people are competing with the 3 units.

That's also true for english, where all extension english students also do Advanced English. But that doesn't mean you can't beat them. ;)
