For me there are too many. Every song by Maiden has a solo and it's awesome, but aside from that.

Dance of Death - Iron Maiden. One of the most epic Maiden soloes.

The solo in Beat It - Michael Jackson performed and written by Eddie Van Halen. It is just awesome tapping and a greater sound than many others.
But Maiden Shits on him, only because i'm a fan though.

Those are my two, only because I cant be bothered listing every maiden song.

What do you think? The greatest guitar solo ever by any artist?

Best solo's by artists:

Pink Floyd:

Comfortably Numb, Time, Money---

Led zeppelin

Stairway to Heaven, Since Ive Been Loving You, and a toss up between any of their other songs such as heartbreaker (no he did not butcher it) or dazed and confused

Hendrix

Voodoo child, little wing and bold as love

ACDC

well they are all kinda the same, start off slow and build up to fast, fav is back in black though

another good mention:
25 or 6 to 4, by chicago

Anything by Jimmy Page......honestly the guy is captain insano.
Yngwie Malmsteen is a freak of nature, his skills are krazy

Lynard Skynard - Freebird
Black Sabbath - War Pigs
Deep Purple - My woman from Tokyo
Pantera - cowboys from hell
Steely Dan - Reelin' In The Years

Anything by santana, his phrasing is just second to none, he can make anything sound sooooo sweet n smooth

I got so many, i can't really list them all. I reckon what really makes a solo great is if it fits in really well with the context of the song

As for maiden, i like the solos from fear of the dark, the trooper and brave new world personally.

A few personal ones that i enjoy include:
ACDC - Whole Lotta Rosie (you gotta see angus do it live though)
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Guns n Roses - Sweet child o mine, and November Rain
Mr Big - Addicted to that Rush (gotta see the live bass vs guitar duel at the start though)
Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train and Mr Crowley
Pantera - Cemetary Gates
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Van Halen - Spanish Fly (and eruption of course :p)

eric clapton's was original though
mason williams definitely wrote it first in 1968 and i don't think Clapton ever made a recording of the song...I could be wrong though, maybe he arranged it for a movie or something (he did work in that business), but i've yet to see any official site credit clapton with a recording of the song :p

Damn fuckin right! Kashmir was the best song that Zeppelin ever wrote. First band to ever have their last album be thier best. And Black Dog, Immigrant song, and Dazed and confused:)

Stairway gets boring really fast after a bit. i prefer their How the West Was Won album over the original. also i like their version of san francisco they fit into the massive 25min dazed and confused they do live.

their best live songs were their anthem ones, like black dog and whatnot

best riffs, black dog and heartbreaker immigrant song

best solo, cant go past since ive been loving you, especially live

and who can forget over the hills and far away, kashmir, achillies last stand and all their other ones

incase u havent noticed i pretty much listened to only led zep for about 8 months before i started listening to other stuff
