I don't like using the term 'sell outs'.

But if one band was the definition of it, it was be Metallica.

Haha I admit it, I got pained when Modest Mouse started playing on the OC and getting reviews in Cosmo. ;)

Jewel I think can be named as the biggest sell-out in music history. You know I'm right!

The Clash sold out in early 1970, U2, although they always sucked. Paul McCartney, and John Lennon would have if he didnt die before he had the chance. Blink 182, but their music was just as cheesy and commercial before they went mainstream, same with Green Day.

biggest sell outs are the beatles!
When did they sell out? If anything they anti-sold out as their career went on. By the White Album it was more a case of "look at us, we can make whatever random music we want and put it on cd and still sell millions of copies." Thats not selling out

But they never sold out music wise. The commoditisation of their success was just a result of Beatlemania which they didnt have any control over. Musically their sound became more obscure and alternative over time and they even created their own record label, so they could be considered indie to a degree

When you acutally start making money, and when people can actually mention your band in conversation and have other people say "Hey, I know that band!".
It depends on who you're talking to. Selling out is where to put monetary profit and success above the music, its not a measure of how popular or well-known your band is
