Hey guys,

I have an assignment whereby i need 2 construct half equations representing the electron transfer reactions occuring when metals react with dilute acids, but i'm completely stuck! I've done some research on the net... but that hasn't helped much. I was hoping someone could help.

thank u

For a M+ metal
H+ + e- --> 1/2H2
M --> M+ + e-

For a M2+ metal
2H+ + 2e- --> H2
M --> M2+ + 2e-

For a M3+ metal
3H+ + 3e- --> 11/2H2
M --> M3+ + 3e-

and so on...

Just substitute M for the relevant metal.

Not something very important, but, it's good to know that not all metals react with dilute (or concentrated) acid. Platinum for example, does not dissolve in sulfuric or hydrochloric acid (though it does dissolve in aqua regia)
