our teacher told us (and it works for me) that it's easiest to write out in full how much u have at the beginning and end of the first few years and from there work out the pattern. this means you don't rely on formulas that the poeple who write the exams assume you're using. this means their evil tricks don't work!

I hope that all makes sense...
