Hello everyone, just a few questions.

I'm tossing up between the 2...it's a bit of a confusing situation and I'd be really appreciative if anybody gave me some advice.

Is their even a job market (that offers progression) for the 2? It seems like everybody in these 2 careers ends up as either a trainer or physio (sports sci) or goes into medicine or gets a job as a medical researcher. Any insight would be welcome

Also for sports science, does it open any avenue's for nutrition? injury diagnosis/rehabilitation?

I don't suppose I can become a sports medicine doctor with a medical science degree ? :(

Thanks for any advice !!

There isnt much of a market for medical science graduats in australia, but apparently its pretty big overseas. with the medical science degree, IMO, those people as u said, usually go on for post grad study, its most likely hard to make a living using that degree in australia at this point in time.

health and exe is prob the best choice out of the 2 IMO. isnt there a combined health exe with nutrition? pretty sure there is. so its prob safe to say yes it does open the door for nutrition. injury diagnosis/rehab can b done in other masters program at usyd lidcome, and they suggest you have a bachelor in health science related degrees.

if you had the choice of the 2, see as though youd like to be a health practiioner of some sort, health and exe is the best way to go. and no you wont be able to become a sports med doc with either degree, post grad med is the way ^^

Most of the double degree options require you to do further study in the two fields to become qualified to practice in either profession. Besides, a person would probably be practicing as one or the other, not both.
In Ex Sci it's all about rehab, special population treatment, etc. There's also quite a bit of material covered on nutrition, though obviously not to the same extent. Look at it this way, three of four years (depending in uni) of Ex Sci you're good to go. You should have a look at UNSW's med faculty website. There's a section on careers for Ex Sci grads.

Depends on what you want to become. Med Sc is for people who want to get into research, like me. The new MedSc program are structured in a way that students finishing MedSc with Honours can get into the half way through the Med program, so that's good for people want wish to pursue medicine.

Ex. and Sport sicence is more of an applied degree and will definitely open avenues for nutrition, injury and rehabilitation. Not sure about diagnosis though. I think that's more of a medical doctor.

My advice is, if you're not a die-hard science person, then choose Ex and sports science. If you are really curious about scientific principles and wish to learn about detailed science (e.g. very specialised topics like neurophysiology, neuroanatomy etc), then choose med science.

Hi There,

At UNSW the course is highly medically based. Our courses are shared with other medicine students, and we also have the option of entering into the medicine program at the end of our studies. The course is also mixed with science subjects, such as biomechanics, which adds variety.

From what I have heard about Syd's course it is full of science, and you have to maintain certain grades to continue! Of course I am no expert, but maybe you should attend the 2 open days from each uni and speak to those in charge. The UNSW ppl are really friendly and happy to answer any of your questions!!!
