It happens all the time (the university setting the cut-off, that is). Given the number of alternative entry schemes it is almost a given that a cut-off will be 'artificial' (in a sense).

Besides, it's USyd, and almost any course that it offers would have a high number of applicants no matter the cut-off.

Hmmm.. let's define artificial lifting of cutoffs as universities consciously raising the UAI required to enter a HECS course. Under different schemes there are different cutoffs per se. Thus, cutoffs remains cutoffs - the lower possible UAI that gains you entrance into a particular course under whichever scheme you fall on. Even alternative entry schemes need cutoffs. :)

So I would agree with cr05's original statement, even though it was harshly put. Unless you qualify for another scheme and make the cutoff for the scheme it's impossible to see how you can get into it.

A number of students may be accepted into a course without meeting the 'required' UAI and without applying for alternative entry. The HECS cut-off is not always set in stone for a particular year.

My artificial point... you're right. I was trying to take note of the individual nature of many alternative access schemes, but it didn't make much sense.

Please also note that I am not saying that this is across the board, just that it does happen.

ok the reason i went off was not because i heard what i didnt wanna hear. BUt the fact that a person 2 posts before stated clearly that someone they knew got in with 91.8.... so ur a spastic for defending a person hu already admitted to their mistake - I am also sorry i called u stupid... both had anger lol

there were two factors... the fact that they were annoyed at people hu got lower and still got into the same course (sub conscious just admit it) i can understand its annoying.... in some cases... but this isnt one of those cases.... the program admits students with upto 5 i have every right to ask, and every right to hope... u have no right to dismiss my hopes with ur annnoyance rating..... that was the reason for the anger.... the fact thta white rabbit defends it is even worse...

i think the statement that noone is stupid "on here" is deinfately incorrect - although u may not be one of them someone else sure is....

why dont u take ur comments back.... loser....

I probably wunt get in... but i was just hoping someone had some solid information that would declare it as a fact that i wouldnt get in... and noone did... especialli not u.... (rabbit)

so stfu in the future unless u have something productive to say....

and dunt u dare patronise me about being subjective on universities... just cuz u are doesnt mean everyone is.... nowhere did i say that it was the end all and be all.... i like sydney for various reasons which im not even gonna bother explaining to u... cuz ur so insignificant...

i hope u dunt make such a mistake in hte future...

It is difficult (impossible?) to say for definate whether you can scrape in or not because as you said, the program does mention 'up to 5 points below HECS cutoff'. There's always a chance you could make it, but going from past cutoff trends, it is a bit trying unless you find some alternative entry scheme other than EAS.

And as for the flames flying back and forth here, I think some people were just getting agitated with the number of uneducated questions about cutoffs across the forum. But I think your question was perfectly legitimate, and probably helpful to others in the same situation as yourself. :)
