hi guys and gals

pls help me~ im very lost, i dont know which one to do, cos i can only do a single major for my course

ok really appreciate if u guys can help to analyse something:

1. i did pretty BAD in Acct 1a and 1b, in fact it was my worst subject in both semesters, does it mean i hav no hope in 2nd and 3rd year accounting?

2. finance or accounting~ whcih one is BETTER in general: in terms of job prospects and usefulness and which one is easier?

3. i heard finance is worst than law in later years, is this true?

4. im more interested in Economics type stuff, well i really enjoyed micro and macro and did reasonably well, is finance sorta related to eco? cos i dont know much bout wat u actually learn in finance except for bonds and shares

5. i didnt do 4U maths for hsc, so im not super good at maths, did 3u got band 6 like just~, is that enuff? how much maths involved in finance? is it more like using Formulas and Excel??

6. ok im doin my timetable now, wat Finance or Accounting Courses should i be choosing?

thanks~

Yeah, why don't you just do Economics if you're good at it, and enjoy it?

Accounting and Finance both have similar job prospects and usefulness as they are both practical majors. Accounting will get you into business management, tax, and audit and Finance will get you into investment banking and the stockmarket etc.

From my perspective, if you didnt do well in Accounting 1A, you'll have trouble in 2nd year, especially 2B (I went from an HD in 1A to a PS in 2B)

are u majoring with law? if so FINANCE for sure.... accoutning u would end up as some mad tax lawyer... which personalli i think is a bore... even though u wuld still make otns of dough... i think a band 6 in 3unit is great... but udunt sound so confident :S so finance/law might not be the thing for u as i hear the mad merchant banks look for people hu are realli mathetmatical minded....

if ur doing law then dunt major in accounting............................................ do international business or something.... not accounting..... i wouldnt anyway

hold on, that depends if you want to work as a lawyer in general
if you want to work for corporations in any capacity using your law degree, you'd do Accounting because it opens you up to more career options, plus the fact that there are always jobs for accounting majors

I've done 4 international business subject's (Two first year and two upper level IBUS subjects) at uni, and it isn't really that practical a major, but its enjoyable

hmm i was reading todays AFR, and its saying how the big4 accting firms are looking towards grads NOT majoring in accting and it can be in any discipline (ie. doesnt have to do business/commerce degree) cuz they are in need for ppl to fill in their positions, like about 850 Vacant!!!? crazy ah?

i think knowledge and skills in finance can be picked up during your job from hands-on experience and further qualifications, esp SIA qualifications are looked upon favourably. MComm (Finance) too.

Maybe the trend is now towards a specialised Finance background.

yep, u dont need to read the AFR to find out - just check out the Big 4 careers website.

Other non-business degrees which have been looked upon favourably by employers include Arts degree because recruiters reckon that the critical thinking required in humanities subjects, eg philosophy, suits accounting.

Maths degrees ---> Actuarial?
